Good Day,
Join us Friday (tomorrow) on our 5:30pm Zoom call to discuss the good news and a victory for Kepler Woods as Conestoga Meats has withdrawn their application to destroy this diverse forest, how the Fight For Farmland sent a strong message at the New Hamburg Fall Fair, and share information on other issues and lots of events coming in the days ahead:
Join us Friday, September 20th at 5:30pm:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz0 <https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz09>
Here’s the latest:
1) Conestoga Meats Forest Destruction Averted - Congratulations to the citizens who banded together and everyone who wrote letters as well as spoke up regarding the application from Conestoga Meats to destroy Kepler Woods, a 36 acre significant forest for the construction of their new plant near Breslau. We learned from Region of Waterloo Staff on Wednesday that their application for forest clearcutting and destruction has been withdrawn. Hopefully, this means that the company has heard a loud, clear message from the community against the destruction of this forest, and instead will pursue one of the many other alternatives that would still allow for construction of the new facility in a different configuration on the site in a manner that would save and protect the forest.
We will have to watch and see how things unfold over the weeks ahead.
Action Required - Please share anything that you can learn and keep speaking up for the need to continue to protect our remaining natural areas.
2) Wilmot Fight For Farmland - There was an incredible showing of community support at the New Hamburg Fall Fair this past weekend as thousands of citizens made it clear firsthand that We Are Unwilling! The Fight For Farmland group had a booth at the fair that was busy all weekend and at times it was all that volunteers could do to keep up with questions, people wanting signs, signing numerous petitions, etc.
Almost every single home in the neighbourhoods around the fairgrounds have Fight For Farmland signs up and the Fight For Farmland had a very high profile throughout the fair. More than 2,000 stickers were distributed for people to wear stating “We Are Unwilling” that were highly visible on people all over the event. We even had groups of teenagers asking for Fight For Farmland stickers for their cell phones, laptop computers, and water bottles.
MPP Mike Harris Jr made his first trip to Wilmot in months and joined Wilmot Mayor Natasha Salonen as well most of Wilmot Council at into the Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening to find almost every single person in the vast hall wearing a Fight For Farmland sticker stating We Are Unwilling. Numerous speakers including even the candidates for Fair Ambassador raised concerns about the Wilmot Land Assembly, the lack of proper process, and the absurdity of this proposed mega-industrial site. It all certainly sent a strong message about the outrage and concern in the community. Mike Harris Jr. left early after only tepid applause to his remarks and has to be worried about his re-election given such a strong, clear message from an unwilling community.
We had hundreds and hundreds of people sign petitions and it was a challenge to ensure we had enough blank petitions to sign at times. Demand was strong for lawn signs with hundreds more distributed. Most importantly though there was so much conversation, discussion, awareness, and agreement from folks from all walks of life that we are an unwilling community for what is being proposed. It will certainly be hard for any local elected official to claim that they aren’t hearing from the community, or that they feel there is broad support for the mega-site based on the strong, consistent public reaction at the fair.
Recent media - Includes coverage from PostMedia that ran in newspapers across Ontario:

Wilmot Council Meeting, Monday September 23rd - This coming Monday Susanna Compton is on the agenda to delegate at Wilmot Township following up her impactful presentation at the Region of Waterloo. We encourage you to come protest/rally in advance of the Council meeting and then join inside to hear the delegations which should be near the start of the meeting. Details are as follows:

Regional Council Meeting, Wednesday, September 25th - Erin Jackson, the youth delegate who gave such an inspiring presentation at Wilmot Council recently will be delegating at Waterloo Regional Council this coming Wednesday evening. Our farmers have offered to help provide a bus to the meeting to ensure that other youth can attend and support her delegation. Please reach out to wilmotlandowners at gmail.com if you would like to reserve seats on the bus and for more transportation details.
Regional Staff Report On Corn Shredding - The Region of Waterloo has also just released the Staff Report requested by Wilmot Mayor Natasha Salonen on the shredding of the corn and wasting of hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars while destroying enough food for 2.5 million boxes of cereal. Of course this short 4 page long report doesn’t mention the waste of food or taxpayer money but instead attempts to justify it all. We need delegations to register to speak to this report and ensure elected officials know how angry the public is about this. A PDF of the Staff Report is attached below or find it online at:

Lawn signs - Demand for lawn signs continues to be strong with hundreds of lawn signs distributed this past week. We have ordered more of both the colour and black & white signs yet again as we near more than 4,000 signs in the community. Find a Sign Captain close to you at www.fightforfarmland.com <http://www.fightforfarmland.com/> and continue to show that our communities are unwilling!
Action Required: Keep calling, writing, and speaking up to Wilmot Township Council to urge them to declare that Wilmot is an Unwilling Host and to both Regional Council as well as the provincial government to abandon this proposed site. Join us on Monday in Wilmot and Wednesday at Regional Headquarters.
3) More Good News! Scugog Township Votes Down MZO - Another exciting win this past week. this time for wetlands, east of the Greater Toronto Area on shores of Lake Scugog. What looked like a done deal by developer Avenu Properties and their fixer, lawyer Quinto Annibale from Loopstra Nixon on a request for a Minister's Zoning Order to develop 600 units in part on a Provincially Significant Wetland was defeated. You can read more about it here:

5) Wilmot Township Strategic Planning Open House - Thursday, Sept 19th 7pm St. Agatha Community Centre - Apologies for the short notice, apparently the Township of Wilmot is holding an Open House for its new Strategic Plan tonight at the Community Center in St. Agatha. How Wilmot can do any future planning when all this Wilmot Land Assembly and hundreds of acres of accompanying development aren’t even part of its Official Plan or congruent with any previous planing and so much of the community is in total opposition is dumbfounding. Please show up tonight if you can and speak up for the future that you want to see:

6) Greenbelt Scandal Impacts and Fallout Continues - The Toronto Star had an excellent feature article by Noor Javed this past weekend with many parallels to the situations we are facing across the Grand River Watershed where so much poorly planned change and chaos from the provincial government is hampering investment and impeding the construction of needed housing. Most importantly the government's focus on building anything, anywhere is destroying the Greenbelt and farmland while not providing the affordable housing needed in the places where people actually want to live close to work, community amenities and family. Check out this excellent article and please continue to work towards the needed solutions:

8) GRCA Conservation Lands Strategy - Please plan to participate on this important Grand River Conservation Authority consultation as the strategy being proposed by the GRCA doesn’t include any targets, metrics, or reporting on how they plan to acquire lands for conservation and recreation purposes. Unfortunately, only three people participated in the last consultation session.
The upcoming Public Information Session will take place on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:30pm virtually on Zoom. Participants must pre-register to get the link at:

D) PunkeyDoodles Steve Todd Song - “Passing Down This Farm” Lyrics for the song about the Van Bergeiks and Mountain Oak Cheese:
It is about handing the farm down to the next generation;
Lyrics - Verse 1:
Adam & Hannie came to Wilmot, looking for a place to raise their kids
Hoping to start a small dairy farm, and bring a little Holland to Canada
Their farm grew, and their family grew, and the love of their new home
With every corn stalk, every hay bale, and every furrow sown
Chorus:
Sun warms the soil, and the rain gives it life, but it’s not just crops growing on this land
They’ll pass on the legacy, hand down the farm, the memories and the love of this great land
Yeah the Van Bergeijks are passing down this farm
Verse 2:
They’ve won awards for their artisan cheese
Now the younger generations learn the family recipes
Every harvest that comes and goes, every season’s change
They hope one day this will be theirs, that they’ll take the reins
Bridge:
In the whisper of the wind and the rustle of the trees their farm has a story… and a legacy
