Good Day,

Here’s the latest on the Wilmot Fight For Farmland, Cooperate for Canada, the GRCA, and more:

1) Region of Waterloo Press Conference For Wilmot Land Assembly - On Thursday afternoon after much secrecy, drama, and media embargoes the Region of Waterloo finally held their first press conference to tell us what we already knew about the mega-industrial land assembly underway in Wilmot Township. The entire event seemed to be much ado about nothing. We already knew that the Region had bought out 3 of the small residential houses at great expense and the one farm parcel that was most likely to sell. The total acreage is 4 acres + 1 acre + 1 acre + 150 acres or just 156 acres of 770 acres - a total of 21%, leaving still 79% to be acquired from the most staunch landowners who are determined to keep farming and not lose their homes, farms, and livelihoods.

If all the Region has to show for five months of work and considerable effort is only a couple of the easiest parcels purchased, with almost 80% of the lands left to acquire it is not surprising that the press conference was poorly received. Making things even worse for elected officials, the Region finally admitted that they have no customer for the lands, they have not completed the needed studies, and still refuse to hold any public meetings. Apparently they also refused to answer many questions at the press conference - still refusing to provide the information the public has been demanding on studies, research, environmental assessments, etc. along with information on costs and where millions of dollars of funding is coming from.

The community has still been left in the dark and all proper planning processes abandoned. There is still no transparency, a considerable lack of information, and eroding trust in government as citizen concerns continue to be ignored and an entire new city is being planned in secret closed-door meetings contrary to all previous plans for intensification and growth in urban areas rather than farmland destroying sprawl.

What We Are Doing - The Fight For Farmland group yesterday filed new Freedom Of Information Requests seeking more details on what we have been denied to date. Earlier this week we appealed the denial of our Freedom of Information Requests to the Provincial Information and Privacy Commissioner, asked the Integrity Commissioner to investigate leaks to developers, and have requested that the provincial Obudsman investigate in-camera meetings and so much information being kept from the public.

The negative impacts for our farmers, our community, environment, and water from this industrial development could be massive. We are determined to get answers and ensure that this mega-industrial site and accompanying development is relocated where there are far fewer negative impacts. We continue to demand a full costing for this proposed development, information on how it will be financed, proper studies, a full Environmental Assessment, public meetings, and answers to so many outstanding questions and public concerns.

We will be continuing to speak up, rally, protest, write, call, e-mail, and do everything possible to show that our community is unwilling to see our farmland destroyed and local farmers pushed off some of the best prime farmland in Canada for an unknown mega-industrial development for a company that doesn’t even exist yet and may never come.

We have a national newspaper coming down on Monday to spend time with some of the farmers. Rally’s planned at upcoming Wilmot and Regional Council meetings, and will continue to get hundreds more lawn signs up across the region. Please keep writing, calling, and speaking up to our elected officials and media.

Once again the Fight For Farmland is front page headlines and the lead item on most newscasts. Here’s the media coverage of the Regional Press Conference so far with excellent comments from our group and many important questions still being asked by reporters as the Region continues to stonewall. In particular the article by Luisa D’Amato countering Regional Chair Redman raises many great points and concerns:

CityNews - Portion Of 770 Acres In Wilmot Purchased By Region Of Waterloo:

Excellent comments from Alfred and a staggering comment from Chair Redman “What community wouldn’t want billions of dollars of investments in thousands of jobs that are good local jobs, intergenerational jobs” Well perhaps a community that wants to remain rural with good food, good water, and the nationally leading agricultural industry that it already has!

2) Wilmot Industrial Mega-Site Fight For Farmland Freedom Of Information Requests Denial - The complete denial by the Region of Waterloo to answer any of our 21 Freedom Of Information Requests continues to get significant media attention. 3) Fight For Farmland - Op-Eds, Letters To The Editor and Editorials - Please continue to speak up and write Letters to the Editor and Opinion Articles. It’s been fantastic to see so many citizen letters and articles being published in all our communities. Kudos to Mike Marcolongo and Andrew Knoop for this excellent article in Ontario Farmer Magazine:

Ontario Farmer - Wilmot Land Assembly Presents A Cautionary Tale For Several Reasons:
(not online yet - see photo below)

4) PunkeyDoodles Steve Todd Continues Media Blitz With Front Page Coverage - It was great to see the full colour front page photo this past week in The Record newspaper of Steve Todd for his song 770 Acres that continues to garner significant attention:

The Record - Wilmot Troubadour Fights For Farmland:
	https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/wilmot-troubadour-fights-for-farmland/article_9b4b2b5f-3f16-5cdb-9323-4e9ba6f5db13.html

Fight For Farmland Sonnet - We’ve also received our first sonnet about the Fight For Farmland from Dr. Robert Hudgins inspired by Luisa D’Amato’s recent article on the Stratford’s victory against the Xinyi glass factory helping to guide things in Wilmot. Please be creative and see how you can help raise awareness and speak up for the future you want to see:

One wonders who it is that runs the shew
For Wilmot Township press core’s scrum.
And why are mayor and full elected crew
So sworn to keep each other oddly mum?
Those seven hundred acres of good land
Still sacred to the growth of yearly crops
Are suddenly and silently all scanned
For shovel-ready use as builders’ props.
One notes the stealth of hirelings sent to find
Some owners of land yet to be concreted.
They must be in a row and all be signed.
Suspicion re the deal has been deep-seated.
Such shifty actions show a need to stress
The welcome intervention of the press. By Dr. Robert Hudgins, July 2024.
