Here’s the latest:

1) Wilmot Industrial Mega-Site Fight For Farmland Freedom Of Information Requests Denied - The Wilmot Fight For Farmland is front-page news again as The Region of Waterloo has refused to release any information about the land assembly underway in Wilmot Township in response to 21 requests files under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The denied information includes requests for important details that should already be public knowledge and part of the Region’s research and planning process such as information on water, wastewater, traffic, costs, alternative sites, and prime farmland protection.

A full list of the 21 Freedom of Information Request questions and yesterday’s press release can be found at: www.fightforfarmland.com

There has been strong media coverage already including front page coverage in Thursday’s Record, the lead item on CTV Television News, and Alfred Lowrick, from the Fight For Farmland group will be on the Mike Farwell Radio Show Friday morning at 9:30am on 570News at: https://kitchener.citynews.ca/audio/

Action Required - Please continue to speak up and show firsthand that we are unwilling!

2) Dissolution of Good Planning In Ontario - Simcoe County elected officials speak up about the province abandoning regional planning at provincial hearings on Regional Reform:

3) Caledon Approves Massive New Developments - In a stunning decision and a sign of the new Wild West that will unfold more frequently across Ontario, Caledon Mayor Annette Groves lead the charge to quickly approve zoning changes for 11 parcels of farmland despite cautions from Peel Region, the Province, and thousands of citizens. The move will approve three times the amount of housing units required by the province for Caledon to meet its housing target of 13,000 new units by 2031:

The Toronto Star - Caledon Quickly Approved 11 Zoning Changes Despite Opposition From Peel And The Province. Critics Say It’s The New Wild West Of Planning In Ontario:

It’s good to hear that Democracy Caledon will keep up the fight and try to ensure that better planning prevails.

4) GRCA Land Disposition Pushback - As you are likely aware, at the last Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Board Meeting, elected representatives approved the new Niska Lands Management Plan as well as plans to dispose of up to eight additional parcels throughout the Grand River. This land inventorying and disposition by the GRCA facilitated by the Ford government’s Bill 23 sets a bad precedent province-wide for Conservation Authorities and needs to be stopped in its tracks. Mike Marcolongo with Environmental Defence is organizing a working group for a push-back campaign - if you’re interested in assisting, please reach out to Mike at mmarcolongo at environmentaldefence.ca <mailto:mmarcolongo at environmentaldefence.ca>

5) Recent Articles - Include Doug Ford promoting Highway #413, great ideas on how to accelerate the clean energy transition, doctors calling out health issues with Bill 165, and Brantford’s Mayor resigns:

6) Ford Government Quietly Announces (While Everyone Is On Vacation) That It’s Abandoning The Deposit Return Initiative - The new program that was to reduce trash, pollution and garbage with a deposit return system for non-alcoholic drinks has been cancelled by the provincial government despite overwhelming public support for the initiative with more than 81% of Ontarios supporting the proposed program and Ontario having one of the worst blue box programs and worst participation and landfill diversion rates in Canada. Read the scathing Environmental Defence media release at:

7) Empty Condos - Despite the housing crisis, thousands of condos in cities across Canada are sitting empty. With all the talk about “Housing Crisis” it would be nice if these vacant homes could be used instead of building on farmland and natural spaces. 12) Cooperate For Canada - It’s great to see more new materials from Cooperate For Canada - new initiative to try to encourage better election outcomes by the creation of a unified, cooperative approach. This important effort has been undertaken by numerous members of our group. Learn more and access materials on the CFC website at:

13) Climate ActionWR Presentations - ClimateActionWR has been attending local Councils to present the latest 2022 Greenhouse Gas Report (we are indeed half way through 2024 already but apparently these numbers take time to compile and report - only adding to our climate woes). Unfortunately, instead of decreasing, our emissions are actually increasing and we are far off target to meet the 50% required emissions reduction target by 2030. You can download the report at the following link:

	https://climateactionwr.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2022-Waterloo-Region-Community-Greenhouse-Gas-Inventory-Report-Published-June-2024.pdf
Tue July 16, 6:30pm - City of Cambridge (delegation form here <https://forms.cambridge.ca/Delegation-Request-Form>)
Mon August 28, 7pm - City of Kitchener (delegation form here <https://www.kitchener.ca/en/council-and-city-administration/appear-as-a-delegation.aspx>)
We would love to see more delegations and also expressions of support for bold climate action at the upcoming council meetings, as above. Please reach out to mats.vankleff at gmail.com <mailto:mats.vankleff at gmail.com> if you have any questions or are interested in delegating at any of these upcoming Council meetings to encourage climate action.
