Good Day,

Here’s the latest on the Wilmot Fight For Farmland, the Ontario Science Centre, the GRCA, the Therme Spa/Ontario Place saga, and more:

1) Wilmot Industrial Mega-Site Farm Land Assembly - Thanks again to everyone who attended the Fight For Farmland Town Hall meetings last week. It was fantastic to see the strong attendance and support.

The Fight For Farmland was front page news again in Saturday’s Record newspaper with the headline “Region’s Divide-And-Conquer Tactics With Wilmot Farmer’s Backfires”. After indicating that they might finally be willing to answer questions, Regional Staff yet again refused to meet with the Fight For Farmland group including local landowners to answer questions and provide information to the community. Several Wilmot Councillors who issued a call for answers, more transparency, and a better process have only been met with complete silence so far from the Region of Waterloo and province of Ontario.

The Region appears to only be willing to meet with impacted landowners individually to negotiate for the acquisition of their property. This is unfortunate as our community's concerns are clear, the negative impacts of any development of this prime farmland will be far-reaching, and so many important questions remain unanswered. We need to continue to tell Regional Council and MPPs to abandon this absurd location for a mega-industrial site and locate it much closer to our urban cities and infrastructure where this sort of development has always been anticipated. Contact information including e-mail and phone numbers for elected officials are located at the bottom of this update. Please take a few minutes to reach out and speak up for the future that you want to see.

Here’s the latest media:

New Music! - Kudos to Punkeydoodles Steve Todd, a local musician who has written a song “770 Acres” about the Wilmot Fight For Farmland that already has over 1,800 plays on YouTube. Check it out and enjoy the music at:

Summer Events and Activities - Thanks to engaged citizens who have been sharing information on the Wilmot Fight For Farmland at area events, festivals, and sporting events with information tables, signs, and printed materials. We can supply flyers, info cards, and lawn signs if you are interested in raising awareness at an upcoming event you will be attending - e-mail wilmotlandowners at gmail.com. Community interest and support continues to be very high and volunteers are reporting excellent response from their outreach.

Lawn Signs - We are nearing 3,000 lawn signs around our communities and throughout our watershed. Please continue the efforts to get signs up over the coming weeks. Area sign captains with both black & white and colour signs can be found at: www.fightforfarmland.com

Action Required - Please continue to speak up and show firsthand that we are unwilling!

2) GRCA Land Sell-Off - Thanks to everyone who spoke up and sent letters to the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Board regarding their Surplus Lands Inventory Staff Report last week identifying lands to be sold off to meet Doug Ford’s absurd Bill 23 December deadline to identify green space to be destroyed for new housing development.

A loud, clear message was sent to the GRCA and it was good to see excellent community delegations from Laura Murr, Susan Watson, Dr. Hugh Whitely, Mike Marcolongo, and others at the Board meeting on Friday. GRCA Staff gave a presentation at the meeting and finally provided information about the seven parcels that have been identified for disposition. Thankfully, it appears that the parcels are small pieces and slivers for land that only total about 11 hectares in total.

GRCA Staff tried to justify the sell-off as being only 0.001% of the 19,900 hectares the GRCA owns, however the disposition of any greenspace for development in a climate crisis is still concerning. The parcels are in Inverhaugh, Guelph, downtown Galt, Brantford, and Rockwood. Confusingly several parcels are within floodplain areas so it remains to be understood how floodplain lands would be suitable for housing. Another parcel is classified as a heritage area and has a significant slope which would be unsuitable for housing as well.

The GRCA re-iterated that there would be public engagement prior to any land disposition process so we will have to see how things continue to unfold. The GRCA is about to set a dangerous precedent for all Conservation Authorities in Ontario with these public land dispositions and will make it easier for our provincial government to further starve Conservation Authorities of much needed funds to deliver their programs, services, and infrastructure renewal by using monetary proceeds from land sales to backstop their budgets. This is like burning the furniture to heat the house.

Join us in the weeks ahead as we develop a campaign to oppose the sell-off of Ontario’s public assets. The Ford government agenda has been to sell-off the Greenbelt, Ontario Place, parts of our health care system, the Ontario Science Centre, and now conservation lands. Let’s ensure that elected officials that support the great Ontario sell-off understand that they will pay a political price for supporting the Ford governments agenda to sell important public assets.

Action Required - Please continue to speak up and state that we should not be selling off precious conservation green lands for development.

3) GRCA Niska Plan - Also at the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Board Meeting on Friday, the Board approved the new Niska Lands Management Plan. This plan outlines 3 possible options for parts of the property that could include disposition of some portions for development. It will be important to keep speaking up to ensure these lands are protected and conserved in the future rather than developed. Learn more in the following articles:

Action Required - Please continue to speak up and state that we should not be selling off precious conservation green lands for development.

4) The Ontario Science Centre Closure - Concern and criticism of the provincial government continues following the sudden decision to close the Ontario Science Centre. It is increasingly apparent that it will cost far more to cost and move the Science Centre to a temporary location in what could take 2 years and then the Ontario Place location by 2030 - 2034 than to simply repair and properly maintain the current Don Mills location that is having both the Ontario Line subway and Eglinton Cross-Town LRT built to it.

The details are staggering as the temporary site could cost more than three times the cost of repairs to the existing Science Centre that could remain open and that both the temporary and new location could be a fraction of the size of the current Science Center - perhaps as small as one-tenth the size! Action Required - Please speak up with letters to the Premier, MPPs, and media for the Science Centre that you would like to see.

5) Stop Highway #413 Campaign - The Narwhal just published another revealing article, this time on how the Ford government plans to start building Highway #413 next year “despite having no final design for the project, no finished environmental assessment, and no planned opening date”. Read more about it:

6) Cooperate For Canada - It’s great to see more new materials from Cooperate For Canada - new initiative to try to encourage better election outcomes by the creation of a unified, cooperative approach. This important effort has been undertaken by numerous members of our group. Learn more and access materials on the CFC website at:

Also attached below is a brochure and informational posters.

7) Recent Media Articles - Include the more investigations from The Narwhal exposing fossil fuel corruption impacting major climate policy announcements, Ontario turning planning over to developers, and will Doug Ford take pages from Trump for his re-election?:

Not our usual content, but really important: Here’s an excellent interview by Christiane Amanpour of Republican Party historian Heather Richardson about the impacts of the US Supreme Court ruling on the Trump court case (“coup”) on the US Presidential election, the skewed media coverage of the Presidential debate (constant lies by Trump ignored, calls for Biden to be replaced as candidate) and more. Will Canadian Conservative politicians take pages from Trump’s tactics for upcoming election campaign’s here?:

8) Wilmot Strategic Plan Survey - The Township of Wilmot has engaged a consulting firm to undertake a survey in advance of the development of their next municipal strategic plan. This is a chance for Wilmot residents to speak up on numerous issues including the Fight For Farmland, Green Development Standards, Climate Change, and other things that you would like to see considered in the future. Access the survey at the following link - you may need to be creative to fit your desired answers into the options provided:

	 https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Wilmot

9) Climate ActionWR Presentations - ClimateActionWR has been attending local Councils to present the latest 2022 Greenhouse Gas Report (we are indeed half way through 2024 already but apparently these numbers take time to compile and report - only adding to our climate woes). Unfortunately, instead of decreasing, our emissions are actually increasing and we are far off target to meet the 50% required emissions reduction target by 2030. You can download the report at the following link:

Mon August 28, 7pm - City of Kitchener (delegation form here <https://www.kitchener.ca/en/council-and-city-administration/appear-as-a-delegation.aspx>)
We would love to see more delegations and also expressions of support for bold climate action at the upcoming council meetings, as above. Please reach out to mats.vankleff at gmail.com <mailto:mats.vankleff at gmail.com> if you have any questions or are interested in delegating at any of these upcoming Council meetings to encourage climate action.
