It was fantastic to see the strong attendance and support.</div><div><br></div><div>The Fight For Farmland was front page news again in Saturday’s Record newspaper with the headline “Region’s Divide-And-Conquer Tactics With Wilmot Farmer’s Backfires”. After indicating that they might finally be willing to answer questions, Regional Staff yet again refused to meet with the Fight For Farmland group including local landowners to answer questions and provide information to the community. Several Wilmot Councillors who issued a call for answers, more transparency, and a better process have only been met with complete silence so far from the Region of Waterloo and province of Ontario.</div><div><br></div><div>The Region appears to only be willing to meet with impacted landowners individually to negotiate for the acquisition of their property. This is unfortunate as our community's concerns are clear, the negative impacts of any development of this prime farmland will be far-reaching, and so many important questions remain unanswered. We need to continue to tell Regional Council and MPPs to abandon this absurd location for a mega-industrial site and locate it much closer to our urban cities and infrastructure where this sort of development has always been anticipated. Contact information including e-mail and phone numbers for elected officials are located at the bottom of this update. Please take a few minutes to reach out and speak up for the future that you want to see.</div><div><br></div><div>Here’s the latest media:</div><div><br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>The Record - Wilmot Farmers Stand Firm As Region Tries To Divide Them:</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span><a href="https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/wilmot-farmers-stand-firm-as-region-tries-to-divide-them/article_ed3596f5-7029-50aa-a343-b544f0425266.html">https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/wilmot-farmers-stand-firm-as-region-tries-to-divide-them/article_ed3596f5-7029-50aa-a343-b544f0425266.html</a></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>CityNews - Wilmot Landowners Anticipate “Technical Details” After Hearing Information Is Coming:</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span><a href="https://kitchener.citynews.ca/2024/06/24/wilmot-landowners-waiting-on-region-to-release-technical-details-after-leaks-information-is-coming/">https://kitchener.citynews.ca/2024/06/24/wilmot-landowners-waiting-on-region-to-release-technical-details-after-leaks-information-is-coming/</a></div><div><br></div><div><b>New Music! - </b>Kudos to Punkeydoodles Steve Todd, a local musician who has written a song “770 Acres” about the Wilmot Fight For Farmland that already has over 1,800 plays on YouTube. GRCA Staff gave a presentation at the meeting and finally provided information about the seven parcels that have been identified for disposition. Thankfully, it appears that the parcels are small pieces and slivers for land that only total about 11 hectares in total.</div><div><br></div><div>GRCA Staff tried to justify the sell-off as being only 0.001% of the 19,900 hectares the GRCA owns, however the disposition of any greenspace for development in a climate crisis is still concerning. The parcels are in Inverhaugh, Guelph, downtown Galt, Brantford, and Rockwood. Confusingly several parcels are within floodplain areas so it remains to be understood how floodplain lands would be suitable for housing. Another parcel is classified as a heritage area and has a significant slope which would be unsuitable for housing as well.</div><div><br></div><div>The GRCA re-iterated that there would be public engagement prior to any land disposition process so we will have to see how things continue to unfold. The GRCA is about to set a dangerous precedent for all Conservation Authorities in Ontario with these public land dispositions and will make it easier for our provincial government to further starve Conservation Authorities of much needed funds to deliver their programs, services, and infrastructure renewal by using monetary proceeds from land sales to backstop their budgets. This is like burning the furniture to heat the house.</div><div><br></div><div>Join us in the weeks ahead as we develop a campaign to oppose the sell-off of Ontario’s public assets. The Ford government agenda has been to sell-off the Greenbelt, Ontario Place, parts of our health care system, the Ontario Science Centre, and now conservation lands. Let’s ensure that elected officials that support the great Ontario sell-off understand that they will pay a political price for supporting the Ford governments agenda to sell important public assets.</div><div><br></div><div><div><b>Action Required - </b>Please continue to speak up and state that we should not be selling off precious conservation green lands for development.</div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"></div><div><br></div></div><div><b style="font-size: 14px;">3) GRCA Niska Plan -</b> Also at the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Board Meeting on Friday, the Board approved the new Niska Lands Management Plan. This plan outlines 3 possible options for parts of the property that could include disposition of some portions for development. It will be important to keep speaking up to ensure these lands are protected and conserved in the future rather than developed. It is increasingly apparent that it will cost far more to cost and move the Science Centre to a temporary location in what could take 2 years and then the Ontario Place location by 2030 - 2034 than to simply repair and properly maintain the current Don Mills location that is having both the Ontario Line subway and Eglinton Cross-Town LRT built to it.</div><div><br></div><div>The details are staggering as the temporary site could cost more than three times the cost of repairs to the existing Science Centre that could remain open and that both the temporary and new location could be a fraction of the size of the current Science Center - perhaps as small as one-tenth the size!
