Here’s the latest:
1) Region Shreds Corn Crop and Taxpayer Dollars at Proposed Wilmot Industrial Mega-Site - Following last week’s troubling Press Conference where the Region of Waterloo admitted that they didn’t have a customer for the mega-industrial site, hadn’t completed the required studies, had no costing or financial analysis, and still refused to hold any public meetings, the Region of Waterloo has since proceeded to start to shred and destroy the bountiful corn corp that was just weeks away from harvest on the single farm that they have acquired.
It is a reckless waste of taxpayer dollars to see over 160 acres of food being destroyed by equipment brought in from St. Thomas after all local farmers refused to destroy the crop. It’s estimated that the Region squandered a minimum of $160,000 by destroying this crop as corn is currently valued at about $5 per bushel, with an average yield of 200 bushels per acre on this prime farmland, representing revenues of about $1,000 per acre. With this single farm parcel totalling 160 acres, this is at least $160,000 in lost revenue, which still needs to be compensated to the landowner by the Region, not to mention the additional cost incurred for crop destruction services. To put this into perspective, this yield could have produced 1.5 million boxes of 600g Corn Flakes cereal.
It’s baffling given the budget pressures on our governments that Chair Karen Redman would make the decision to spend so many tens of thousands of taxpayers dollars destroying a corn crop so close to harvest. It is all just such a waste and so unnecessary other than to try to intimidate other area farmers into caving into pressures to sell their lands.
It has been fantastic to see the media asking all the right questions over the past week though including the following articles:

Mike Farwell Radio Show - Wednesday, July 24th - Alfred Lowrick spokesperson from Fight For Farmland and Kevin Thomason were in the studio together to talk about the Wilmot Fight For Farmland and the Wilmot mega-industrial site was the lead item on newscasts throughout the entire day. Listen to the show and learn the latest at:

What Else We Are Doing - The Fight For Farmland group launched additional Freedom Of Information Requests last week seeking details about all previous FIR’s that were rejected. Investigations have also been requested by the Provincial Information and Privacy Commissioner, the Integrity Commissioner, and Provincial Obudsman. We are determined to fight this absurd scheme that’s contrary to all previous planning and will do everything possible to prevent this unplanned industrial mega-site and thousands of urban sprawl homes proposed for the new city of New Hambadenburg from destroying Wilmot Township and our future sustainability.
Summer Event Activities - We will be hosting information tables and selling Fight For Farmland lawn signs at numerous upcoming events and activities around Waterloo Region. Let us know if you would like flyers, cards, and signs to share at any events you may be a part of.
Wilmot Council Meeting Rally - Monday, July 29th at 5:00pm - This is an important opportunity for our communities to show firsthand that we are unwilling. Please gather at Castle Kilbride at 5:00pm with signs and banners to greet elected officials and media as they arrive for this month’s only Wilmot Council meeting.
Action Required - Please continue to speak up, join Monday’s Wilmot rally, and show our communities are unwilling!

3) Grand River Issues - Unfortunately there has been three recent drownings in the Grand River - all of which were preventable with proper lifejackets and awareness. There has also been considerable flooding along the Grand River that has damaged Lion’s Park in Paris so badly that it will be closed for the foreseeable future, causing upcoming events to have to find new locations. It is possible that flooding and flood damage can be partially attributed to increased runoff from nearby new housing development sites. Learn more in the following articles:
