Subject: BC and Alberta's heat thermals made Hurricane Harvey worse
Dear Hon. Prime Minister and Ministers
Previously I sent in an email to the Prime Minister and other ministers, regarding the heat thermals of Alberta Tar Sands and how they have altered jet streams creating a Rossby wave impact that is tampering with global weather patterns and aviation. The letter I wrote and attachments can be viewed at this website: https://whoacanada.wordpress.com/tag/rossby-waves/
In light of Hurricane Harvey I began to examine the recent flow of North America's jet streams and in the attachments is a screen shot of what I observed.
The BC Fires were fed with hot air rising up along the Pacific Coasts. This brings hot air from around the equator up into communities along the Pacific and it links to hot temperatures being experienced currently by areas such as San Francisco.

Just prior to the BC fires, an article was published in the TYEE titled One-Third of BC’s Oil and Gas Wells Leaking Significant Levels of Methane, Study Finds written by reporter Andrew Nikiforuk dated 5 July 2017. It speaks of the high number of methane leaks in BC linked to oil and gas infrastructure and water wells just prior to the massive BC fires.

The issue of methane leaks may have been a contributing factor to the extreme intensity of BC's fires. Media reports noted how water evaporated before they hit the flames.
The concerns for methane leaks are not limited to the area of BC. I live in Waterloo Region and in our area, we have abandoned natural gas and water wells producing methane creating similar risks. Back in 2008 I spoke with a man named Orville B. Good, who was on the Citizens Water Monitoring and Citizens Land Fill Monitoring for Wilmot Township. He spoke to me of a farmer he knows with 500 acres. For every 50 acres there was a water well. Over the years the wells were not needed so as standard practice, farmers would filled them up with field stone and topped it up with sod. The wells are still under the working fields today, exposed to manure and pesticides and in many cases, we have no idea where the old wells are.
Back in 2014 a report was produced at University of Western titled: The Abandoned Works Program, SW Ontario: identifying the sources of leaking natural gases by Joanna Potter, Mitchell Skuce Fred J. Longstaffe and Terry Carter . The abstract states:
50,000 wells dispersed across the region ∼27,000 are on record at the MNR. For many wells, there is no information on drilling depth or producing formation and a large number have not been plugged properly. On occasion, due to the lack of records, plugging these wells has been problematic and extremely costly.

As a delegate of the Enbridge Line 9 NEB hearings, I raised concerns about these uncapped wells at the Line 9 reversal hearing in London Ontario. Line 9 passes through farm fields throughout South Western Ontario. The NEB deemed the issue "out of scope" because the scoped Environmental Assessment was limited to the area of Enbridge's pumping stations only without any regard for connecting pipes in between which was unreasonable in my view.
Getting back to the issue of the jet streams, the warm air was drawn to fires in BC which amplified the thermals generated by Alberta tar sands creating a huge arc of warm air pushing into in the Arctic. The displaced cooler air flowed to towards Houston amplifying the amount of moisture experienced during Hurricane Harvey. The system rises up sharply drawing warm Gulf winds heading East Bound along that continued Jet stream. I have two screenshots from a website in the attachments from a website called stormsurfing.com showing where the air is being drawn with it. I took screenshots of the jet stream impacts from the website stormsurfing.com and that site features an animated version of the global jet stream that can be viewed here: http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display_alt.cgi?a=glob_250
So at this point, I am very worried for the fate of our planet. We can't rely on the courts to save us from climate change because the industry delays with appeals. Wall Street won't save us nor will the banks. They are too busy saving themselves. The Jet streams don't lie and we honestly don't have any time left to delay our duty to protect this planet's atmosphere or human lives.
People are dying right now because of our nation's actions or lack thereof and there is so much fear of liability Canada seems afraid to move but the simple truth is this brinkmanship has to end. Honor the Treaties and cancel the pipelines. Stephen Harper gave the Prime Minister the power to veto all NEB decisions. Start using it. If the powers that be go after Canada, we can fight back with the Rights of Indigenous people in the International Criminal Court.
We have choices to make here. I opt that we choose not to kill people. It's time for a meaningful partnership with First Nation's to help save this planet.
