Hi folks
I participated in the PMRA webinair yesterday and a PDF copy of the power point used is in the attachments for your reference. It contains the specificity of the toxicity of Imidacloprid pesticides and I wanted to point out a couple of quick things.
-I asked if the data for frogs included cross generational frog toxicity data and they admitted the scope didn't go there. They only tested mature frogs without regard for aquatic stages of life ie: Tadpoles. I took issue with this because frogs are known to transfer toxins through their eggs protecting the parent animal and the toxic impacts only show up with the next generation. Such  was the case with Atrazine so it is reasonable to state the PMRA is still using the same flawed testing methods when it comes to testing for adverse impacts to amphibians. -The scope of the study did not include bee toxicity because there is separate testing underway to examine those concerns.-This data does flag toxicity to birds who consume seeds but suggest it is a temporary risk phase for birds.-The studies show alarmingly high toxicity concerns in Ontario than in other areas of study so there are variants in levels seen based on demographic data. One person who called in suggested it might be related to the use of drainage tiles and the reapplication of toxins that were released in water supplies.-The green house levels for these chemicals are down right scary. -One fella called in and criticized the PMRA for omitting toxicity results for the test data of HIS study that they were referring to. That was a very interesting phone call. The PMRA stated they will review his concerns. -Although the ban is set to be in place for agricultural use, there will still be residential use of these chemicals in gel applications and for use in pet products etc. The ban as it stands appears limited in scope to agricultural use which makes me wonder about golf courses etc.
The power point saved as a PDF is in the attachments for your reference.
