Dear Louisette
Today, the Ontario government announced that it will immediately enact measures to protect bees from harmful neonicotinoid pesticides. And you, along with tens of thousands of other concerned people, made it happen!
The new measures, effective as of July 1, 2015, are the first of their kind in North America:
Reduce the number of acres planted with neonicotinoid-treated seeds by 80 per cent by 2017.
Provide training for farmers to evaluate their soil and help them identify conditions for neonicotinoid use.
Sign here to thank Premier Wynne for protecting the bees.
Neonics have been proven to be toxic to bees. During the winter of 2013-2014, bee deaths in Ontario reached 58 per cent, threatening biodiversity and food security. A recent draft report from Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) shows that coating seeds with neonicotinoid treatments has minimal benefit to corn and soybean yields.
Thank you for taking action to help save the bees.
