Light-Rail City Planning in Kitchener

Here is what happens to a city when it builds light rail. In this
case, it is Kitchener:

In an effort to create a vibrant urban neighbourhood city officials
have redrawn the land use map for an important stretch of King Street
West.

The area from the railway tracks to Union Street is among seven chosen
for a new attempt at city building. In the parlance of City Hall
planners this stretch of King Street West is a Mixed Use Corridor.

"It's really like an evolution of these urban areas that we see as
important," Alain Pinard, the city's interim director of planning, says.

King Street West is the first of those seven areas to have the
properties in the corridor rezoned to support development that is
pedestrian oriented and transit friendly.

I think it's imperative that we have station area plans for the inner
city areas as well. Many of them have development potential, like
Hurdman, Bayview and Cyrville. In addition, many of them have
redevelopment opportunities. These are the stations thatwill give us
the most if we redevelop and plan around them, not the greenfields of
the future.

Waterloo Region has also been undertaking a station area planning
initiative... for Ottawa I think we can do some of the same,
especially once we extend our line past the initial line.
