Hi GREN Exec,
I met a woman recently - some of you may know her - at the Multicultural
Festival at the Humanist Booth. She has co-authored a book which I said I
could review for the paper. She's very interested in environmental issues
and is also a webdesigner, BUT this was her recommendation for the GREN
website:
" For the web site, I would suggest contacting Conestoga College and
connecting with the teacher who does the Web Design courses. This looks
like an excellent project for students. If they set it up as a 'Content
Management' site, different parts of your group could have password access
to update their own sections and things would stay up to date. We've just
taken that approach with Interfaith Grand River. The students will be
submitting their designs to us at the end of July. I'll try to find out
more about who to contact and let you know."
Also, she said these nice things about the water forum we hosted:
"I attended the Water Symposium at rare in 2013. It was excellent - very
informative. I'd be happy to be involved in planning public educational
events like that, including such things as the Town Hall meetings with
candidates, etc. I have to get through the NonCon
(http://www.thenon-conference.com/) in August first, but I'll look forward
to attending your September meeting and seeing where that leads."
Best,
Karis

and yes our website needs redoing. I made it - completely winging it - but
no one seems to have the ability or time to maintain it and keep it current
and active. We meet fairly infrequently, but have an email discussion list
and recruit each other for "bums in seats" and sharing info as needed. Our
strength seems to be submitting comments and papers on local policies and
official plans...I think there are a few copies of things we've submitted on
the website. And with the upcoming federal election, we'll partner with a
few other groups and have a forum for candidates for their positions on
environmental issues. That will be something I will be actively involved in
organizing.
Talk later! 8-)

Hi Susan,
I really enjoyed meeting you today as well!
Thank you for all of this information. I am so grateful for these tips,
since this is a whole new world for me. I will follow down every
suggestion.
Your environmental activism sound intriguing. I was quite serious about
volunteering to help with whatever environmental issues you are working on,
if not now then in the future. I'm so glad our paths have crossed!
Have fun making music tonight,
Karis

Here are some ideas...while they're still fresh in my mind...otherwise they
disappear! Lol
Chapters - both stores, contact them and they will take books on consignment
and can set you up for a book signing (hopefully they do still do this)
Wordsworth Books will take a few books, but only keep them for a short time
due to their smaller retail space
Talk to book acquisitions people at KPL and WPL
Cannot make any guarantees on review being published in Record, but I will
certainly write one. There are 2 other possibilities came to mind - send
Greg Rothwell the info about your book launch event for the book page and
just thinking now that it would be worthwhile contacting the religious page
editor - don't know who it is now, but easy enough to find out. You might be
able to get an article in the Sat paper about your book and pantheism etc.
http://www.thebookband.com/ - these are the people who carry indy published
books and go to different community events. They also seem to be linked with
the Niagara Literary Festival http://www.nlaf.jigsy.com/ - and it was St.
Catherines that I ended up reading - not too far..
Eden Mills Writers' Fest http://www.edenmillswritersfestival.ca/ - you can
rent a table cheaply, and lots of people go, but the attendees seem more
into the celebrity author thing...but worth doing once - it's a very
pleasant event.
There is the annual Elora Writers Festival
http://elorawritersfestival.blogspot.ca/ but there's also an "open stage"
kind of writers festival that is organized by Donna McCaw where you go, sign
the sheet and read for about 5 minutes - I went for the first time this
spring and there were about 10 people reading and there's another one
organized for the fall sometime.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. 8-)

Hi Susan,
Lunch sounds good. Cafe 22 does some nice lunch salads and other lunch
items. It is in Uptown Waterloo, across from Famosa Pizza (the old Rude
Native), in other words across from Waterloo Square and up a bit. Let's say
11:30 - 11:45 so you don't need to rush.
See you Tuesday,
Karis

Hi Karis,
Good to hear back from you. Tuesday can work for me. I jam with the "old
folks" at Rockway Tuesday morning until 11:15, so I could meet you at 11:30
or after lunch after 1:30. Or for lunch. Your call. 8-)

Hi Susan,
My first boxes of books have arrived. Would you like to get together for
coffee and a chat and a book exchange? Sometime Tuesday, July 7 could work
for me. I would suggest Cafe 22 on King Street in Waterloo, but feel free
to suggest someplace else if you have a preference.

Hi Karis,
I spoke with you briefly at the Multicultural Festival on Saturday and
checked out some of the information you gave me. It all sounds good.
I had mentioned that I would like to get a copy of Why Men Made God (which
you failed to mention you were a co-author of 8-)) to review for The Record.
You can either drop off a copy with Greg Rothwell at the Record and let him
know to hold it for me to pick up, or snailmail it, or I can meet you
someplace to get a copy.
Happy to trade books, too. This is mine:
