I hadn't heard of this bill. Perhaps GREN can acknowledge the happy rescue of the Chilean miners by distributing this Amnesty appeal regarding an important bill (which I admit I hadn't heard about). Shall we distribute this to the membership? I'd be willing to write a letter for GREN to Waterloo MP Peter Braid.

You can help make sure that Canadian mining, oil and gas companies always respect human rights

Dear Mr Michalenko,

For many years now, Amnesty International has voiced its concerns about human rights violations associated with the mining, oil and gas industries.

The poor practices of some Canadian mining, oil and gas companies have damaged not only the industries’ reputation, but our own national reputation.

Fortunately we have an opportunity to improve this situation, but we need to act immediately.

In a matter of days, a very important bill will be voted on by the Canadian House of Commons.

The bill is called Bill C-300, An Act Respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Oil, Mining or Gas in Developing Countries.

The purpose of the bill is to ensure that Canadian mining, oil and gas companies act in a manner consistent with Canada’s international human rights commitments and environmental best practices when they do business in developing countries.

Please take action urgently: Ask your MP to vote for Bill C-300

I am writing to you today to urge you to contact your Member of Parliament<http://ems01.com/a/l.x?T=ikjeolpbmfhejckahmhegfmaka&M=2> and ask them to vote for Bill C-300.

The vote is going to be extremely close. The mining industry has been pressuring Members of Parliament to vote against the bill. Some Members of Parliament are wavering. We need to ensure that Members of Parliament also hear from Canadians who are concerned about human rights and who support Bill C-300.

For more information about Bill C-300, please visit our corporate accountability blog<http://ems01.com/a/l.x?T=ikjeolpbmfhejckahmhegfmaka&M=4>.

Thank you very much for taking action on this really important issue.

Best regards,
