Good Day,
This week’s update brings yet another surprising plot twist in the Greenbelt Scandal, the Wilmot MZO development from Cachet has returned, Waterloo Region introduces a Lobbyist Registry, some great news about a win at the OLT for the Forks Of The Credit Preservation Group, and both rallies and delegations that would benefit from your support on Wednesday and Thursday. Then join us at 5:30pm on Friday to discuss and learn more:
Join us Friday, March 21st at 5:30pm:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz0 <https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz09>
Here’s the latest:
1) Breaking News - Greenbelt Scandal Continues! In a surprise move the Information and Privacy Commissioner’s Office has ordered the Ford government to dig deeper for possible traces and evidence of direction from the Premier’s Office for Greenbelt removals and provide explanations in affidavit if anything is or isn’t found, including to explain if records no longer exist how such records were destroyed and provide reasonable explanations as to why. It seems that the IPC has found that there’s reasonable basis for believing that the records exist.
This certainly isn’t good news for the Ford government that is already facing an RCMP investigation over the Greenbelt Scandal. Opposition Leader Marit Stiles stated “Doug Ford has used every trick in the book to keep the details of his Greenbelt land grab secret, even as the RCMP continues their criminal investigation. This latest order from the IPC will show just how far this government has gone to cover its tracks…”. Learn more at:
The Trillium - Ford Government Ordered To Dig Deeper For Possible Traces Of Premier’s Office Direction Of Greenbelt Removals:
https://www.thetrillium.ca/news/politics/ford-government-ordered-to-dig-deeper-for-possible-traces-of-premiers-office-direction-of-greenbelt-removals-10387736
And of course the similarities and parallels between the Greenbelt Scandal and the Wilmot Land Grab continue as well.
2) Council Delegations - Tonight and Monday! - Fight For Farmland and WilmotCAN will have delegations at tonight’s Region of Waterloo Council meeting and Monday’s Wilmot Council meeting. The delegations send a much stronger message when supported by a large public presence at these meetings.
We will also be joining striking CUPE 1656 Regional employees who are on strike at their rally prior to the Regional Council meeting starting at 6:00pm in front of Regional Headquarters which will have CUPE President Fred Hahn in attendance.
Regional Council Meeting - Wednesday, March 19th, 150 Fredrick Street East, Kitchener - Rally starts at 6:00pm, Susanna Compton will delegate at 7:00pm
Wilmot Council Meeting - Monday, March 24th - 60 Snyder’s Road West, Baden - Delegations start at 7:00pm
Hundreds of CUPE 1656 outside workers in red shirts were strongly supportive of WilmotCAN’s delegation at the last Regional Council meeting. Now they are on strike they have brought some environmental concerns to our attention including:
1) Waste Management - with the local recycling and waste management sites closed refuse from the region is being transferred to unknown private sites costing the Region significant money and putting other systems at risk.
2) Water Supply - with the CUPE workers who test and ensure our water supply is safe on strike, it is believed that managers who are uncertified are currently conducting these tasks which is putting the water supply at risk.
Action Required - Demand better from the Region of Waterloo speak out against the Wilmot land grab and for fair wages for regional employees tonight (Wednesday, March 19th) at 6:00pm at Regional HQ.
3) All-Out Hospital Rally - Join folks across Ontario protesting at local hospitals to demand better nurse to patient ratios. Local rallies are being organized by the Waterloo Region Health Coalition in support of the Ontario Nurses Association. Details are as follows:
Date: Thursday, March 20th
Times and Locations: 11am to 12noon at Brantford Community Healthcare System
1:30pm to 2:30pm at Grand River Hospital, King St, Kitchener
3pm to 4om at St. Mary’s Hospital, Queen’s Blvd, Kitchener
3:30pm to 4:30pm at Guelph General Hospital, Guelph
Action Required - Help support the call for better healthcare in Ontario.
4) Wilmot Cachet MZO Returns - It seems that the massive development in Wilmot Township proposed by Cachet Developments in 2021 as an MZO (Ministerial Zoning Order) that sought to bypass proper planning processes and was defeated by overwhelming community opposition has returned again now following proper planning processes. The proposed development appears to have less density, fewer high-rise towers, and more townhouses but will still be an urban development unlike anything ever seen in Wilmot Township before.
There are homes for thousands of people still right next to a highly explosive chemical plant and many other concerns such as Mississauga and Milton-like density, questions about waste-water, and traffic issues. There will be a public meeting coming up on April 7th.
Learn more about the proposed development at:
https://developmentapplications.wilmot.ca/Home/Detail?Id=18c67c2f-1dd3-492f-8e0e-b1828fc87b82

Action Required - Learn more and speak up for the future you want to see in Wilmot and our rural communities.
5) Wilmot Council Dysfunction Called Out By Integrity Commissioner - In a lengthy 34 page report Wilmot’s Integrity Commissioner has concluded that two Wilmot Councillors did not breach the code of conduct by refusing to leave a Town Hall meeting but concluded it was “unseemly in its apparent absence of goodwill”. The report urges Councillors to work together better for the simple issue of good governance.
Once again, Wilmot Township is the source of significant concern and needs to do far better. Learn more at:

6) Region of Waterloo Lobbyist Registry - Following the similar actions of a few other Ontario municipalities, the Region of Waterloo has introduced a Lobbyist Registry. While aimed more at professionals charging fees for consulting and lobbying, there are facets that will apply to citizens, volunteers, community groups and others simply speaking up for a better future. We will need to attend upcoming information sessions and learn more to ensure that we are in compliance with these new regulations.
Learn more at:

Virtual information sessions will be held on:

7) End Enbridge’s Free Ride - The push back campaign against Enbridge’s free ride for pipelines - not paying the same fees for access to municipal rights of way as others continues. Guelph has passed a motion to charge for use of municipal easements similar to what Enbridge already pays in other provinces but Enbridge has appealed to the Ontario Energy Board. Speak up and support local B Corps who are asking Enbridge to be a good corporate citizen and pay fair easement fees. Learn more and speak out at:

9) OLT Dismisses Appeal By CBM Aggregates - CBM has lost its appeal at the OLT against Caledon’s Interim Control By-Law. Congratulations to the Forks Of The Credit Preservation Group (FCPG) who chose to be a Party to this appeal along with the Town of Caledon. It was community fundraising and excellent work by lawyer David Donnelly that helped achieve rare success at this hearing.
