Good Day,
It’s a quieter March Break week after the provincial election though it has been good to see more front page news coverage about the Wilmot land grab, Doug Ford loses again at the Supreme Court, Kitchener-Conestoga MP Tim Louis announces the Canada Farmland Protection Act, while Kitchener-Centre MP Mike Morrice calls for electoral reform, more concerns about massive water-taking to drain aggregate pits below the water table in the Grand River watershed, and more. Here’s the latest:
1) Wilmot Mega-Industrial Land Assembly - It was good to see the media headlines and coverage this week about the Wilmot land grab including WilmotCAN’s John Jordan responding with an Op-Ed article that Mike Harris Jr’s provincial election win with only 20% of eligible voters actually voting for him in Kitchener-Conestoga was not an endorsement of any sort for this bungled industrial development fiasco as far more people voted for opposition parties:

Tim & Fran Strassburger - It was also fantastic to see the significant front page Record coverage of Tim and Fran Strassburger’s situation as some of the impacted landowners in the Wilmot land assembly and how much this government disaster has negatively impacted their lives for over a year. Not only did they have great newspaper coverage but Tim was interviewed by Mike Farwell on 570News where he pointed out that it’s not about money. This is their home and they don’t want to move. This simply isn’t the right location for a massive industrial complex right in the heart of prime Wilmot agriculture:
The Record - None Of It Makes Sense And Frustrations Mount In Wilmot Township:

https://kitchener.citynews.ca/podcasts/the-mike-farwell-show/the-mike-farwell-show-march-12th-2025
CKMS Radio Coverage - Mini-documentary Series - the short videos produced by Thom Varey continue to get significant attention as John Jordan did an excellent interview with Dan Kellar on CKMS Radio about the video series:

https://radiowaterloo.ca/ckms-news-2025-03-06-new-mini-documentary-series-digs-into-secretive-assembly-of-farmland-in-wilmot-township-by-regional-government/
Toyota Presentation at Confederation Club - Scott MacKenzie, the Director of Corporate and External Affairs for Toyota Manufacturing Canada gave a speech this week at the Confederation Club where Regional Chair Karen Redman and Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic were in attendance. Scott stated that Toyota has nothing to do with the Wilmot Land Assembly, that Toyota has no land assembly processes underway anywhere in Ontario, and they would simply build any future plant needed on the 500+ acres sitting vacant at their Woodstock facility if needed.
We Are Not Willing Letters - It’s been great to see letters in recent Council packages. If you haven’t written yet, learn how simple it can be to speak up with your concerns about the Wilmot mega-industrial proposal using the Communication Guide on the WilmotCAN website:
https://wilmotcan.com/communication-guide/
Fundraising - WilmotCAN wants to thank the all of the people who have donated so far to protecting Waterloo farmland. This fundraising will help to organize future events, help with communication costs, produce additional videos, and undertake legal action. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation. Learn more at:
https://smallchangefund.ca/project/protect-waterloo-farmland-now/
Action Required - Continue to speak up, write elected officials, and make it clear that we are not a willing host.
2) MP Tim Louis Announces Canada Farmland Protection Act - Kitchener-Conestoga federal Member of Parliament Tim Louis has announced the Canada Farmland Protection Act that will establish a national framework to conserve farmland, support farmland trusts, harmonize conservation practices, create conservation incentives and secure the future succession of farmland. Consultations will be happening locally and across Canada to create this new legislation to protect farmland for generations while also ensuring our food security.
This could be a really powerful initiative. Learn more in the following video, radio interview, and article:

Action Required - Reach out to MP Tim Louis (contact information at bottom of the e-mail) to support this initiative and ensure that farmland protection is a key issue of the upcoming federal election.
3) Supreme Court Strikes Down Ford’s 3rd Party Limits - Once again Doug Ford has lost another court battle wasting huge amounts of taxpayer dollars on initiatives that aren’t in the best public interest and are thankfully struck down by the courts. This time the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the overly restrictive third party advertising rules implemented by the Ford government three years ago simply weren't balanced or in the best public interest when the government in power has unlimited advertising with few rules.
WilmotCAN saw firsthand just how limiting third-party advertising was in the recent provincial election where even just mailing a single letter to every constituent in the riding would have exceeded new draconian spending limits. While we don’t want a US style situation where billionaires can spend hundreds of millions of dollars to single handedly influence voting, we do need to ensure that community groups, unions and other organizations have some reasonable ability to get messaging out to voters and the community during an election. 8) Recent Articles - Include concerns about Ontario’s new recycling program, court decisions on Doug Ford’s plan to remove bike lanes and the fact that the province’s own reports say car collisions could increase 54% with injuries and death, and the need for more solar power in Ontario,

Speak up now and share your thoughts on building better buildings and more resilient, efficient communities. Given that more than 40% of our carbon footprint comes from buildings and design of our communities, making significant improvements will be essential in addressing climate change. These standards have been years in the making and could help influence energy use, building construction, new EV adoption, tree planing, water efficiency and much more.
There is an online survey that you can fill out as well as lots of other ways to submit feedback. Learn more and engage online at:
https://www.engagewr.ca/high-performance-development-standards
Action Required - Speak up now for better building and development standards that are more efficient, cheaper to run, more resilient, and will help to address the climate crisis. Deadline is March 17th.
