Good Day,
It’s looks like the election mayhem will be expanding across Ontario as Doug Ford calls a vote 17 months early, the Region of Waterloo has wasted $18 million buying prime Wilmot farmland unnecessarily destroying agriculture in the community, the new WilmotCAN video against the mega-industrial sites is getting thousands of views, after record growth the Region of Waterloo’s population is now suddenly projected to fall, Cooperate For Canada launches a local Grand River Chapter, and lots of great local events coming up. Join us on Friday at 5:30pm on Zoom to discuss and learn more:

Here’s the latest:
1) Provincial Election? - According to numerous sources Doug Ford will be announcing a provincial election next Wednesday, January 29th for a very short campaign period until a February 27th election. This totally unnecessary election call is more than 17 months early and is predicted to cost over $150 million. It will also be a significant distraction from fighting the challenges being posed by new US President Donald Trump as Doug Ford seeks to time an election to maximize his chances of winning. Calling early elections for personal gain has backfired in the past when Premier David Peterson called an early election only to lose in a surprise win by Bob Rae and perhaps it will happen again this time:

Vote Like Your Quality Of Life Depends On It - The AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) has launched a public awareness campaign in advance of provincial election calling for clear commitments from all provincial parties to enhance quality of life in our communities. It focuses on three areas where provincial partnership can improve quality of life and community well-being - curbing reliance on municipal property taxes to fund provincial responsibilities, investing in local infrastructure to build housing, and tackling homelessness. Check it out at:

Please join and help to better guide election outcomes provincially and federally. Learn about unity candidates, voting pledges, and cooperation through networks. Details are as follows:

3) Regional Councillor Rob Deutschmann Resigns - In an surprise move, Region of Waterloo Councillor for Kitchener lawyer Rob Deutschmann announced his resignation from Regional Council and intention to seek the provincial Liberal nomination in Cambridge challenging Conservative MPP Brian Riddell. Previously, this riding has been represented by Liberal Cabinet Minister Kathryn McGarry. Regional Council has 60 days to determine how to fill this vacant Council seat either through a by-election or appointment:

4) WilmotCAN Launch Continues - The new community group, Wilmot Civic Action Network (WilmotCAN) continued its launch against the massive Wilmot mega-industrial site with the release of its new website, social media accounts, and the ongoing release of the first of three mini-documentary videos that has already received thousands of views and many positive comments. Please e-mail wilmotcan at gmail.com to register and get meeting details if you can help with actions over the weeks ahead to get elected officials to abandon this development scheme that is so contrary to all previous planning and protections.
Action Required - Please help this new Wilmot Civic Action Network (WilmotCAN) take the fight against the Wilmot Mega-Industrial Land Assembly to the next level, continue to write and e-mail elected officials, and show that we are an Unwilling Host.
5) Fight For Farmland - $18 Million Wasted On Land Purchase - The Record announced that the Region of Waterloo has spent more then $18 million taxpayer dollars on just a small fraction of the farmland proposed to be destroyed for the Wilmot mega-industrial site that still doesn’t even have a customer or many prospects given the current economic threats:

Wilmot 51% Tax Increase Townhall and Budget Meetings - The widespread concerns about Wilmot Township and the disastrous 51% tax increase continue with further Wilmot Budget and Council meetings planned for this coming Monday January 27th starting at 5:00pm where Councillors hope to get answers and additional information from Township Staff so that they can finalize and approve the budget for the coming year.
There still has been no financial costing done for the proposed Wilmot mega-industrial site and there is no evidence that the Mega-Industrial Land Assembly will provide any financial benefit to the municipality. It will most likely only further deepen Wilmot's troubles and financial woes.
Wilmot Township Council: 60 Snyder’s Road West, Baden - Monday, January 27th - Budget Meeting starts at 5:00pm. Council Meeting starts at 7:00 pm
There is also a Regional Council Meeting this coming Wednesday at 7pm:

Action Required - Please keep calling and writing demanding the needed actions to stop the improper planning, bad budgeting, and this absurd mega-industrial site that threatens our communities.
6) Waterloo Region Predicted Now To Have Falling Population - After record growth over the past year, surprisingly Waterloo Region is now predicted to have a falling population. Future growth rates are also being called into question with concerns about groundwater and one planning expert asking “Why would you ever want to have one million people?”:
The Record - “Conestoga Effect” Drives Waterloo Region Population Estimate Past 700,000 people in 2024:

7) Sprawl Is Making Ontario’s Housing Shortage Worse - Why Is Ontario Building Fewer & Fewer Homes - Environmental Defence released a new report on how the urban sprawl being forced by Doug Ford’s provincial government is making Ontario’s Housing shortage worse with housing starts at a 69 year low. Environmental Defence correctly predicted last year that the government’s policies were a disaster in the making and that it was building the wrong housing in the wrong places. A potential trade war with the United States makes it even more important to protect critical farmland and focus on building affordable, modest housing near transit.
Check out the excellent report at:
https://environmentaldefence.ca/report/mid-rise-manual/
Action Required - Help make sure Doug Ford’s housing failure is a leading issue in the pending election and demand the sustainable, affordable housing people can afford in the right places near transit and existing infrastructure.
8) Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference Round-Up - Mike Marcolongo, represented Environmental Defence at the ROMA Conferene (January 19th to 21st) and will provide an update at tonight's call including the push by Minister Calandra to unleash sprawl in Rural Ontario by changing the legislative framework that currently allow rural municipalities to ban communal sewage. Mike will provide a summary on:
- The Minister's Forum on Communal Sewage
- Energy Procurement in Rural Ontario session (as it relates to the current Long Term 2 procurement); and
- Impact of Changes to Provincial Policy Statement on Rural Ontario.
9) Concerns Raised About Massive Aggregate Pit Water Talking - Concerns are being raised about the applications from John Dick Construction at Lower Quarry Lake and Quarry Sump to take almost 15 million litres of water per day for 10 years - a staggering amount in the Guelph area where there are already so many water issues:
GuelphToday.com - Concerns Raised Over Proposed Water Taking Application At Puslinch Quarry:
https://www.guelphtoday.com/wellington-county/concerns-raised-over-proposed-water-taking-application-at-puslinch-quarry-10073507
Action Required - Speak up for groundwater and our environment to elected officials in Puslinch Township, Wellington County and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
10) Join The Gravel Rally & Stop The Campbellville And Mt Nemo Quarries - Doug Ford promised to stop the Campbellville and Mt Nemo quarries but now for several years has failed to follow through on his promise to local communities. Attend a rally and live musical performances by Sarah Harmer and Jim Cuddy at this indoor rally in-person on Saturday, January 25th. Learn more and register to attend at:

If you can’t make it in-person, join online through Facebook Live at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1119166176029070/
Action Required - Attend the rally, enjoy great music, and help to send a message to Premier Ford and MPP Zee Hamid to keep their promise.
11) Bill 212 - Bike Lanes and Highway #413 - Ecojustice has filed an urgent motion asking the courts to stop the Ontario government from putting lives at risk by ripping up bike lanes in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario. An April 16th court date has been set but an injunction has been filed for March 11th to stop the province from destroying bike lanes even sooner. Learn more at:
https://ecojustice.ca/file/challenging-the-ontario-governments-anti-bike-lane-law/
This past week Mike Marcolongo spoke on a panel with Alison Stewart from Cycle TO on Bill 212 and will speak on tonight’s 5:30pm call about their legal action with the request for an injunction:
Protect the Red Side Dace And Help Stop Highway #413 - Environmental Defence has launched a new campaign to protect the critically endangered Red Side Dace and help stop Highway #413 as the Federal government is supposed to issue a Habitat Protection Order by Today, January 24th. 14) Denmark Offers To Buy The United States - Kudos to The New Yorker for the creative piece about Denmark fighting back against Trump’s threat of taking over Greenland with an offer to buy the United States instead:
COPENHAGEN (The Borowitz Report)—After rebuffing Donald J. Trump’s hypothetical proposal to purchase Greenland, the government of Denmark has announced that it would be interested in buying the United States instead. “As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale,” a spokesperson for the Danish government said on Friday. “We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.”
“Denmark would be interested in purchasing the United States in its entirety, with the exception of its government,” the spokesperson added.
A key provision of the purchase offer, the spokesperson said, would be the relocation of Donald Trump to another country “to be determined,” with Russia and North Korea cited as possible destinations.
If Denmark’s bid for the United States is accepted, the Scandinavian nation has ambitious plans for its new acquisition. “We believe that, by giving the U.S. an educational system and national health care, it could be transformed from a vast land mass into a great nation,” the spokesperson said.

When it comes to Canadian climate policy, the Emissions Cap will dominate discussion in winter and spring of 2025. This policy is one of the signal policy commitments of the current federal government, and its success or failure will play a large role in defining Trudeau’s climate legacy.
