Good Day,
It continues to be a busy start to the new year and there has already been a series of rapid plot twists and turns. We’re facing numerous crises including climate, affordability, and wealth inequality, and on top of this we are experiencing erosion of our democracy and foreign interference. And yet there still is deep division amongst Canadian progressives - illustrated by the range of responses by various political leaders and elected representatives to Monday’s announcement by Justin Trudeau of his resignation. Elections are on the horizon - let’s do our best to continue to share news, ideas, and work together.
We’ve had hundreds of citizens speaking out at budget meetings across Wilmot Township, the provincial government has just announced surprising renovation rebates in a new efficiency program, Get Concerned Stratford has launched unprecedented legal action against the City of Stratford for trying to ban citizens from public meetings, and there are several interesting upcoming events. Join us on Friday at 5:30pm on Zoom to discuss and learn more:
Join us Friday, January 10th at 5:30pm for our first meeting of the year:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz0 <https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz09>
Here’s the latest:
1) Fight For Farmland Members and Citizens Across Wilmot Speak Out On Budget Concerns - The widespread concerns about Wilmot Township and the proposed 51% tax increase continue with citizens filling recent Town Hall meetings held by each ward Councillor and packing Council Chambers to overflowing at Tuesday’s Budget Council Meeting where 20 delegations and over 50 letters in the Council Package raised many issues.
Most delegations were excellent and there has been significant media coverage on the radio, on television, and in area newspapers. There still has been no financial costing done for the proposed Wilmot mega-industrial site and there is no evidence that the Mega-Industrial Land Assembly will provide any financial benefit to the municipality and will most likely only further deepen the Township’s troubles and financial woes.
Astoundingly though Wilmot Council doesn’t seem to grasp that growth and development have significant costs. On this massive industrial land assembly that the region and province want completed immediately, Wilmot has budgeted absolutely nothing this year - despite the fact that there is going to be such tremendous costs when there is none of the needed infrastructure. Even if the province picks up some costs for the mega-site, they aren’t picking up the costs of all the other residential and other industrial expansion Wilmot has sought and had approved. Yet Wilmot has not budgeted for any of this significant development either.
Unless of course by budgeting nothing for the Wilmot mega-industrial site they don’t believe it will happen or don’t want to support it all which could be fantastic news for the community…
It will be interesting to see what happens as there was a tremendous fight between Wilmot Councillors at Saturday's Town Hall meeting for Ward 4 held by Councillor Steve Martin and Councillor Lillianne Dunstall that considerably delayed the start of the meeting with a crowd of over 300 people in attendance and saw Councillor Steve Martin walk out of his own Town Hall for the duration of the meeting when other Councillors were asked to leave and refused - demonstrating firsthand the division and disfunction of this Wilmot Council.
Here’s some recent media regarding this staggering tax increase and the recent meetings:

Direct From Doug Ford - Last week we highlighted the suggestion from local activist Judy Brown to reach out to text or call Premier Doug Ford directly on his personal cell phone where he continues to encourage people to contact him directly. Judy reports that Doug responded back to her outreach this past week stating that he would follow-up with Regional Chair Karen Redman. It’s unfortunate to see the provincial government continuing to blame Waterloo Region when we know that the province is funding and directing this mega-industrial site in such an absurd location. We encourage you to speak up as well. Please be respectful and ensure that Doug Ford knows of your concerns firsthand at: 647-612-3673.
Strategic Planning For New Activist Group - Frustrated and angry citizens from across Wilmot are wanting to take things to the next level against this proposed Wilmot Land Assembly, engaging more groups, increasing the fight for more farmland protection here in Wilmot and across Ontario, and perhaps even Greenbelt expansion to provide the long-term planning certainty we have all just lost with the destruction of our Regional Official Plan as of January 1st.
Back in December a meeting of dozens of citizens, activists, and groups was held with successful outcome of incorporating this new group and starting the first activities. The next planning meeting is going to be this Saturday, January 11th at 1:00pm to continue planning and map out the next actions. Details are as follows:
Date and Time: Saturday, January 11th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: Wilmot Mennonite Church, 2995 Bleams Road, New Hamburg (across the street from the proposed mega-industrial site)
Or Join Virtually: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84747627218?pwd=6SYJls0v0MQRtFqqPts2uabw2CevkH.1
Action Required - Please consider helping this new group to take the fight against the Wilmot Mega-Industrial Land Assembly to the next level, continue to write and e-mail elected officials, and show that we are an unwilling host.
2) Ontario Election? - Doug Ford appears to be considering calling an Ontario election soon in response to Trump tariffs (despite the fact that Trump has not even been sworn in yet):

3) Ford Government To Offer Energy Rebates - In an unexpected announcement the Provincial Energy Minister Steve Lecce announced an impressive provincial program that will provide up to 30% rebates on renovations, solar panels, heat pumps, and more. Combined with federal incentives this makes things like switching to heat pumps instead of fossil gas furnaces a no brainer. This is a considerable reversal for the Ford government that originally cancelled numerous successful energy efficiency and rebate programs at great cost when they first were elected several years ago. It’s fantastic to see this reversal and such a strong program announced but perhaps it is an insight into just how significant of an energy crisis we could be facing in the near future without programs like this :

4) Get Concerned Stratford Launches Legal Action - The community group Get Concerned Stratford that helped to bring together the community in Stratford to successfully stop the development of the proposed Xinyi float glass plant that would have had so many negative impacts for their city have just announced that they have launched legal action against the City of Stratford. The group is very reluctantly pursing legal recourse since they have been left with no other options to ensure that their members can attend public meetings and participate in the democratic process for planning in Stratford.
It is very concerning to see the actions taken by the City of Stratford staff and elected officials against their own citizens without seemingly any significant grounds or reason other than to silence people raising concerns. Learn more and support this community group at their website:
https://www.getconcernedstratford.org/2025/01/08/we-have-decided-to-take-legal-action/
Action Required - Learn more and speak up as democracy, proper planning processes, and citizen engagement is increasingly threatened here and around the world.
5) Stop The Campbellville And Mt Nemo Quarries - Doug Ford promised to stop the Campbellville and Mt Nemo quarries but now for several years has failed to follow through on his promise to local communities. Attend a rally and live musical performances by Sarah Harmer and Jim Cuddy at this indoor rally in-person on Saturday, January 25th. Learn more and register to attend at:
https://www.reformgravelmining.ca/rally_stop_the_campbellville_and_mt_nemo_quarries
Action Required - Attend the rally, enjoy great music, and help to send a message to Premier Ford and MPP Zee Hamid to keep their promise.
6) Speak Up At Provincial Finance Committee Hearing Meetings Or Make Submissions - There is a great opportunity to provide input on the 2025 provincial budget and request the provincial government invest in programs and investments to protect and restore nature. You can complete the online survey, send a written submission or apply to appear before the Standing Committee. Learn more at:
https://www.ontario.ca/page/2025-budget-consultations
Action Required - Speak up for the future that you want to see and to tell the government not to waste taxpayer money on things such as the Wilmot Mega-Industrial site or subsidizing fossil fuels.
7) Recent Articles - Include Ford’s election strategy and rapidly increasing homelessness:

Ontario’s crisis is significant but not unresolvable and AMO laid out a $11 billion plan over 10 years to achieve zero homelessness.
8) Reasons Not To Vote For Doug Ford - Kudo’s to Pauline Miller who has started to draft a very long and comprehensive list of reasons on why not to vote for Doug Ford. The amount of concerning actions is long and there are far too many examples of this government working against the greater public good for just the benefit of a few well-connected donors. Check it out as a Word Document attached in Appendix C) below and feel free to share your own additions.
9) Halton Launches Free Park Pass Program For Nature Based Healing - Congratulations to the visionary folks at Conservation Halton who have partnered to bring the successful BC Parks PaRX system here. The program allows residents to be “prescribed” 10 free visits that will encourage people to get outdoors, enjoy nature, exercise and learn about natural surroundings. The Toronto Conservation Authority and Metro Toronto Zoo are also part the program.
These prescriptions can be issued by a variety of healthcare professionals including chiropractors, dentists, doctors, massage therapists, nurses, opticians, pharmacists, podiatrist and social workers.

10) GRCA Source Water Protection Plan - January 13, 2025 Deadline! - In yet another surprise discovery, local activists have found that the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has once again failed to notify the public in any meaningful way about important updates to the Grand River Source Protection Plan to ensure the integrity of our municipal drinking water sources.
Changes are related to the replacement of a decommissioned well in Lynden (City of Hamilton) and policies have also been updated to conform to the 2021 technical rules for identifying drinking water threats.
Learn more about the Source Protection Plan Update at:
https://www.sourcewater.ca/source-protection-areas/grand-river-source-protection-area/grand-river-source-protection-plan-update/
We only have until January 13th to respond by sending comments to comments at sourcewater.ca <mailto:comments at sourcewater.ca>
Action Required - Please review the proposed plan and follow-up with feedback before the January 13th deadline.
11) Brantford D’Aubigny Creek Watershed Development Plan Open House - Wednesday, January 15th from 7:30pm to 9:30pm - After winning the prize for the most absurd Public Information Centre event time of Friday December 20th from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the start of the Christmas holidays there is a second date in January if you happened to miss this first Open House.
D’Aubigny Creek is a cold water tributary of the Grand River and the development proposed by developer LIV Communities would negatively impact the wetlands that feed the tributary. Study information is available at:
https://www.rjburnside.com/shellard-lane-development/
Apparently a neighbourhood meeting for the Proposed Official Plan and Zoning By-Law Amendment for the Shellard Lane Special Policy Area 20 will be occurring during the same times/same locations as the PIC #2 Meeting:
Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2025 7:30pm to 9:30pm
Location: Saint Theresa School, 12 Dalewood Ave, Brantford N3T 5L7
Action Required - Speak up to protect this watershed from development impacts.
12) New Provincial Regulations Diminishing Environmental Protections By Conservation Authorities - On January 1st new legislative amendments came into effect to reduce minimum distances between development lands and wetlands and to give more powers to the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry to direct Conservation Authorities. Astoundingly, the new rules also allow developers to bypass Conservation Authorities and apply for permits directly at the Minister’s office without a Conservation Authority review:

13) IESO Long-Term 2 RFP For New Energy Procurement Draft Request for Proposals - This Friday, January 10th is the deadline for comments for the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) energy procurement. Send comments to:
LT2.RFP at ieso <mailto:LT2.RFP at ieso.ca>.ca <mailto:LT2.RFP at ieso.ca>.
The Province of Ontario is significantly upping the number of Megawatts to be procured to 7,500MW in the next four years while stacking the deck for more natural gas powered electricity. Details can be found here:
https://www.ieso.ca/Sector-Participants/Resource-Acquisition-and-Contracts/Long-Term-2-RFP
Action Required: Speak up now to ensure better and cleaner energy in the future.
14) Cooperate For Canada - The C4C plan urges the Liberals, NDP and Greens to work together - without any mergers - to ensure we elect governments that better reflect the values, concerns, and priorities of the majority of Canadians. Our plan seeks to address the split in the progressive vote that results in under representation in government. Threats due to the multiple crises we face - housing affordability, attacks on our democracy, foreign interference, and disinformation are reaching emergency levels. A business as usual approach will not work.
Cooperate for Canada has both a federal focus: https://cooperateforcanada.ca/
And a provincial focus (Ontario): https://cooperateforcanada.ca/ontario/
Check out the latest newsletter: https://cooperateforcanada.ca/2024/12/15/december-2024-newsletter/
New C4C chapters are also being organized in the GTA, Hamilton- Niagara, Ottawa, and Kingston. Encourage people you know to get involved in these areas, or start their own chapter as momentum continues to build.

C) Halton Park Pass Program:
Halton launches free park pass program in support of naturebased healing
Conservation Halton allowing residents to be `prescribed' 10 free visits

CONSERVATION HALTON PHOTO
Mountsberg Conservation Area's Winterlit offers an opportunity to get outdoors in the winter.
People from Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville can now get a nature prescription that allows them 10 free visits to Conservation Halton parks to improve their health.
Earlier this month, Conservation Halton and Halton Healthcare partnered with the PaRx program (initiated by BC Parks Foundation) to promote the therapeutic benefits of naturebased health solutions in the region.
Adam van Koeverden, member of Parliament for Milton, who introduced the PaRx program to Halton earlier this summer, calls it a “gamechanger for our community.”
“It encourages outdoor activity, fosters a connection with nature, promotes physical health, and nurtures mental resilience and environmental stewardship,” van Koeverden said in a media release announcing the program launch on Dec. 2.
Halton Healthcare declared it “is proud to be the first hospital system in Canada to partner with PaRx” in the statement.
“The partnership between PaRx and Conservation Halton allows health professionals to prescribe an effective remedy to our patients,” stated Dr. Stephen Chin, Halton Healthcare's interim vicepresident of medical affairs. “Nature prescriptions offer an accessible and sustainable way to improve the health of our community and is a wonderful complement to the care we provide.”
According to Dr. Chin, spending more time in nature is “a great way” to treat and prevent chronic diseases, keep healthy and even extend life expectancy.
“We know that certain diseases, like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, are linked to chronic stress too. Spending more time in nature, releasing natural endorphins and improving cortisol levels, can help reduce stress, and also blood pressure in some ways. And hopefully delay the onset of diabetes and heart disease as well,” he explained in an interview.
The doctor says being outdoors can also help with mental health and sleep.
Encouraging people to spend more time with nature, Dr. Chin said that “even short snippets of time outside is good enough.”
“I think 20 minutes per day is sufficient,” said the doctor.
“It doesn't have to be running, it can just be walking,” he added.
“It's a bit cold right now, but when it gets warmer, it (being outdoors) will help reset people and bring significant health benefits to many,” according to Dr. Chin.
After obtaining a nature prescription from a healthcare professional, patients must fill out a PaRx Request Form on the Conservation Halton website.
“We just want to make sure it's very, very simple,” said Craig Machan, Conservation Halton's parks and operations director.
According to Machan, Conservation Halton is the first park program in Ontario to offer free entry passes to people with nature prescriptions.
“We're following what national parks and other park agencies across Canada are doing, by giving free admission to make it as easy and as accessible as possible,” he said.
Having eight people sign up within 24 hours of the launch “is quite amazing,” according to Machan.
Conservation Halton has eight parks — Crawford Lake, Hilton Falls, Kelso, Mount Nemo, Mountsberg, Rattlesnake Point, Robert Edmondson and Area 8 — for people to enjoy.
“When the season is open, there really is a lot of opportunity for people to get out into nature and enjoy themselves and be comfortable. We're close to home. So, you're not driving an hour and a half or more to get into nature. We're in everybody's backyards,” said Machan.
Conservation Halton joins a growing movement of support for Canada's national nature prescription program, which began in British Columbia in November 2020 and launched in Ontario a few months later in February 2021.
While the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) came on board in March this year, the Toronto Zoo joined last September.
Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority also showed its support by hosting a “Park Prescription (PaRx) Day” at Scanlon Creek this October.
Dr. Chin said nature prescriptions can be issued by a number of healthcare professionals, including an acupuncturist, chiropractor, dentist, dietician, family doctor, kinesiologist, massage therapist, registered nurse, optician, physician, pharmacist, psychologist, podiatrist and social worker.
“Talk to your healthcare professional about the park prescription program to make sure that they're supportive of it and that it fits their goals for you as a patient,” advised Machan. “Then just go outside and enjoy it.”
For more information about the national nature prescription program, visit the PaRx website.
