Good Day,

It’s been another busy week where the Premier blamed the Region of Waterloo for the Wilmot Land Assembly, the community rallied including a Baden tractor parade, and lots more. Join us tonight (Friday) at 5:30pm on Zoom to discuss these and other issues:

Join us today - Friday, October 4th at 5:30pm:

Here’s the latest:

1) Fight For Farmland At the International Plowing Match - Almost two dozen volunteers from the Fight For Farmland team made the long journey to Lindsay Ontario where they caught up with Doug Ford at the International Plowing Match on Tuesday. It was an impressive impact as the team distributed thousands of “We Are Unwilling” stickers for attendees to wear in support of the Wilmot landowners, had dozens of Fight For Farmland signs, and even marched in the show parade with a large banner alongside all the Ontario political parties with strong support from MPP’s from the NDP, Liberal, and Green Parties.

At the opening ceremony they were able to question Doug Ford where the Premier blamed the Region of Waterloo for the Wilmot Land Assembly and stated that he had no idea why all the secrecy and lack of transparency despite the province being the one that has forced such a brutally strict NDA upon our municipalities and region - silencing all of our elected officials and staff.

The provincial media showed great interest in all the controversy and there was excellent radio, television, and newspaper coverage including the first coverage for Fight For Farmland in the Toronto Star as well as Toronto television and radio stations:

The provincial media coverage then spawned more local media coverage:

MPP Catherine Fife TwitterX Post (with excellent video):

The Premier’s comments specifically calling out Regional Chair Karen Redman and telling Fight For Farmland members that we need to get the Region to abandon this absurd site is the opposite of what we are being told by our municipalities and region. They are stating that it is Doug Ford and MPP Mike Harris Jr. that need to cancel it. Each is pointing fingers at the other in a very circular argument with no one taking responsibility.

However it certainly seems that the Premier is overlooking that it is the province that is funding the entire project, the province that demanded the extreme NDA that has bound all our elected officials, the province that refuses to release the Region from the NDA, and the province that has been making most decisions while the Region apparently has to get provincial approval for any action they try to take in this land assembly.

Action Required - We need to keep up the pressures on all levels of government. We need Wilmot Township officials to listen to their citizens and to declare it is an unwilling host, we need the Region of Waterloo to abandon this site and undertake proper planning processes to locate the industrial mega-site in a better location congruent with our Regional Official Plan with far less negative impacts. And we need the province to keep Planning Authority with the Region of Waterloo while restoring our Regional Official Plan to provide essential long-term planning certainty.

2) National Farmers Union Rallies for Wilmot Farmers - Congratulations to the NFU for an excellent event this past Sunday in Wilmot that included a delicious BBQ featuring a bounty of local farm products, tours of Tim & Eva’s cabbage farm making St. Jacob’s Sauerkraut, speeches, a tractor parade around the mega-site and through Baden drawing strong community support, as well as an aerial photo of tractors and citizens spelling out NO in Alfred’s farm field. This impressive photo taken from a drone is attached below in Appendix C along with other event photos.

Kudos for such a great event, so much community support, and to everyone who attended!

3) Other Fight For Farmland News - There has been numerous other activities this past week in the Fight For Farmland including excellent media coverage following up last week’s Wilmot and Regional Council Meetings. There were many great delegations from community members and Record Reporter Luisa D’Amato has written an fantastic article reporting that some Regional Councillors are hearing our concerns and are starting to be opposed to this proposal mega-industrial site:

	https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=3001249

We are making good progress and need to keep sending a very strong message to elected officials that "We Are Unwilling”. Key points for you to emphasize in e-mails, letters, calls, and conversations include:

	- none of the proper planning processes have been followed,
	- this industrial mega-site location is contrary to all previous planning, Official Plans, and farmland protection rules,
	- the site lacks most of the required infrastructure which is likely going to be very expensive to provision,
	- there has been not a single public meeting,
	- there have been no studies, no reports, nor any research released to the public (or perhaps even completed),
	- there has been no financial cost analysis, or study and tax rate increases could be significant to fund this effort for private enterprise,
	- there will be significant traffic implications for kilometres in every direction,
	- in addition to the 770 acre mega-industrial site there are hundreds of acres of unplanned residential and industrial lands being designated between New Hamburg and Baden for tens of thousands of new residents far exceeding all previous plans,
	- more than 4,000 lawn signs and 45,000 petition signatures are clearly showing widespread opposition and concerns.

There has been a spreadsheet created where you can record who you have contacted and any follow-up from elected officials:

	https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KJnzF8LpJbhHLF27gC3IMhJcRPAaVAKWOAiro9FnTEA/edit?pli=1&gid=0#gid=0

Lawn signs - Demand for lawn signs continues to be strong with many more lawn signs distributed this past week. New colour and black & white signs have arrived as we surpass more than 4,100 signs in the community. Find a Sign Captain close to you at www.fightforfarmland.com <http://www.fightforfarmland.com/> and continue to show that our communities are unwilling!

Action Required - Please write and call elected officials and record it on the spreadsheet while ensuring as many lawn signs are up in our communities as possible to show that We Are Unwilling!!!.

4) Princess Film Festival Night - Laurier Wellbeing in Film Forum (LWIFF) - Save the date of Monday October 28th and plan to attend a special Fight For Farmland movie night at the Princess Cinema in Uptown Waterloo as part of the LWIFF Film Forum. More details will be available soon in future updates and on Instagram at:

	https://www.instagram.com/00lwiff/

5) Ontario Place Destruction Continues - In addition to starting to cut down dozens of mature trees in the middle of the night on Wednesday, the Ford government finally released details of the lease agreement with Therme after NDP MPP French’s questions about costs went unanswered in Wednesday’s Standing Committee meeting.

Here’s a video of MPP Jennifer French’s questioning of the government about the Ontario Place Therme NDA that resulted in the government finally releasing the terms of the agreement after more than a year of questioning. There could be parallels and implications for the Wilmot Land Assembly NDA that also has consistently refused to be released:

Action Required - Continue to speak out to the provincial government and demand a better plan for Ontario Place. Help us figure out how to leverage this incident to learn more about the Wilmot Land Assembly NDA.

6) Climate Emergency Vigils Start This Friday! - Starting Friday, Oct 4 (tonight!), Faith Climate Justice Waterloo Region will be hosting public climate emergency vigils in Waterloo Public Square, free for all to attend. These vigils build on the power of the 16 vigils hosted last fall, and are designed to create sacred spaces to process complex climate emotions together, to reflect, and to share opportunities for action leading up to the Conference of the Parties climate talks, COP29 happening in November. Spread the word and we hope you will join us. For more information see the poster attached below or visit:

7) Recent Articles - Includes the TTC banning misleading fossil fuel ads, the City of Waterloo denied grants, and an article with an excellent summary of the dozens and dozens of condo towers in Waterloo currently in Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) hearings:

Canada’s National Observer - Toronto Transit Agency Bans Misleading Advertising From Fossil Fuel Companies:

Once again the City of Waterloo can’t build the needed infrastructure for 2,500 new homes already approved because it can’t afford the expense and no one will fund it - not even governments supposedly desperate for housing…

8) Region of Waterloo Water Supply Strategy Update - In a timely coincidence with the Wilmot Land Assembly, it appears that the Region of Waterloo has launched its Water Supply Strategy Update to seek enough water sources through 2051. The project will identify short-term and long-term recommendations for drinking water supply. It will be important for citizens to have a strong voice and role if we want to ensure a sustainable future and avoid a very expensive and troubling pipeline to Lake Erie.

11) Deadcatting - There is a term for Ford’s outrageous statements whether they be comments like this Highway 401 tunnel or grandiose promises like the “fantasy tunnel” or "buck a beer". It is a way to get people’s mind off of our climate issues, privatization of healthcare, lack of affordable housing and good transit. It is called “deadcatting” after an incident with the Mayor of London. Learn more at the following article:
