Good Day,

A reminder that tomorrow (Friday, November 10th) at 5:30pm is our regular bi-weekly Update Meeting on Zoom. Join us to discuss the latest breaking news on the Forced Urban Boundary Expansion reversal reversals and further provincial government corruption discovered this week:

	https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82644695701?pwd=bnRsUGtWSUcrRnFWR21uYVBISG9jZz09

Here’s the latest news:

1) Forced Urban Boundary Expansion Reversal Reversals - As reported earlier this week, it’s extremely alarming to see Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Paul Calandra bypass Regional governments responsible for Official Plans and announce a new process for Mayors to unilaterally decide changes to 30 year Official Plans with no Council input, no public consultation, nor even public record in this newly announced process to re-enable recently cancelled Forced Boundary Expansions.

It has been fantastic to see community groups working together to rally citizens and do everything possible to ensure that our Mayors approve our Official Plans intact - as for example, the Waterloo ROP was overwhelmingly supported and endorsed just 14 months ago in August, 2022.

The pressure from developers and land speculators will be intense over the weeks ahead to get these local Official Plans changed to promote urban sprawl on the specific lands they own. We will need to continue to speak up loud and clear for the sustainable future that we want to see.

Given the resignations and investigations already underway of the provincial government, area Mayors would be wise to distance themselves as much as possible from the corruption and scandal at Queen’s Park and not become party to it by asking for lands that we don’t even know how they were selected by the previous Minister to be selected again in this absurd new process for development approval.

We already have the sustainable Official Plans that we need to far surpass our housing targets without the addition of anymore farmland and unaffordable urban sprawl in Waterloo Region, Halton Region, Wellington County, Hamilton and also other impacted communities.

Kudo’s to the City of Waterloo for unanimously passing a motion (attached below) raising concerns about the Minister’s approach and expressing strong support to see our Regional Official Plan proceed intact. Please work with your local Council to see if they can pass a similar motion.

Hold The Line Waterloo Region has updated their automatic e-mail machine to include local Municipal Councillors in Waterloo Region so please ensure that you have spoken up to your local Council as well (all area Councillor address attached at the bottom of this e-mail update):

Guelph Ward 3 Councillor Phil Allt wrote a great letter on the travesty of using Strong Mayor powers to push for the urban boundary expansions:

2) Additional Corruption Revealed - The Trillium yesterday broke the story of the Ford government rezoning numerous land parcels in Peel Region owned by generous developer donors to the Progressive Conservative Party despite significant Ministry Staff objections and concerns:

3) Kitchener Succeeds With National Housing Accelerator Fund - The City of Kitchener become one of the first seven cities in Canada to successfully receive funding from the new National Housing Accelerator Fund. This $42 million of funding will fast track over 1,200 housing units over the next three years in Kitchener. Unlike so many provincial housing initiatives that have seemed more designed to benefit developers than actually building needed homes, this federal program will help to provision affordable housing by making land and incentives available for affordable housing:

5) Investigative Reporting Finding The Ford Government Failing - Investigations into MZO’s and the Housing Acceleration Fund not surprisingly are finding that the Ford government is failing badly, programs aren’t meeting objectives and have actually been slowing down as well as hindering home construction, planning, and development processes:

6) Local, Provincial and National Media Coverage - Here's some of the other news articles from the past week as it is revealed that housing starts are falling far short of targets, Guelph fights back against the Premier, other communities push back as well against corrupt developers, and a new traffic study shows Highway #413 is not needed:

7) Editorials and Insights - Here’s a great editorial on Doug Ford’s rapidly eroding trust and credibility:

8) Greenbelt Promise Webinar On ERO Submissions - Thanks to everyone who joined the Greenbelt Promise webinar, together feedback was submitted to the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) calling for full and permanent protection of the Ontario’s Greenbelt. November 30th is the deadline for submissions on this Bill 136 ERO so help spread the word and ensure that we have as many voices as possible speaking up for the full protection of the Greenbelt. There’s an easy to use automatic tool on the Greenbelt Promise website to help draft submissions:

	https://greenbeltpromise.ca/

Key points to emphasize on Bill 136, the Greenbelt Statute Law Amendment Act include:

	- legislating that the 10 year Greenbelt Reviews can only add lands to the Greenbelt with no land removals or land swaps,
	- ensure meaningful First Nations consultation,
	- prohibit “Pay to Slay” that enables habitat destruction of species at risk in the Greenbelt,
	- prohibit the licensing of new aggregate extraction permits in the Greenbelt,
	- protect all Prime Agricultural lands in the Greenbelt through Conservation Easements,
	- end the grandfathering of previous zoning for development applications within the Greenbelt.

9) NFU Rallying Against Investor Farmland Purchases - The National Farmers Union (NFU) is organizing a rally and lobby day in Ottawa to advocate for a ban on investor ownership of farmland. Even if you can’t attend you can find more details, an open letter, and social media sharables to support them at:

If you are in communities such as Guelph, Brantford, Brant County, Stratford, Perth County, etc. be thankful that your Official Plans haven’t been overridden by the province and experienced forced urban boundary expansions. Please continue to encourage your elected official to decline developer donations and work towards the sustainable communities we need.
