Good Day,

There are lots of things to update on this week:

1) Holiday!!!! - We are going to give everyone a holiday this coming Friday at 5:30pm and allow you to celebrate your holiday weekend however you like without having to do our usual everyother Friday Zoom call. We are going to take a break and hold our next Friday at 5:30pm update meeting on Friday, August 18th instead. Please use your time to submit a response to the Environmental Registry of Ontario prior to the 11:59pm Friday deadline.

2) Speak Up By 11:59 pm on Friday, August 4th - Feedback to the government regarding the rural severances, new PPS, natural heritage system changes, and agricultural system update needs to be submitted to the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) and our MPPs by August 4th. There has been strong feedback from municipalities and we all need to be responding as well:

Woolwich Observer - Townships Raise Concerns Over Province’s Changes to Planning Process:
	https://www.observerxtra.com/townships-raise-concerns-over-provinces-changes-to-planning-process/

In the appendix of this e-mail there is a document from Ontario Nature with talking points that you can use for your submission. The Federation of North Toronto Resident’s Association (FoNTRA) has also created a great website and resource for submission to the ERO on the PPS that is attached below as well as an online tool that you can check out at:

	https://ispeakup.ca/petitions

It’s fast and easy to submit a comment directly to the ERO - even if it is only a couple of sentences at:

	 https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-6813

3) Very Successful Rally Against The Big Sprawl - Thanks to everyone who came out this past Saturday to The Rally Against The Big Sprawl! The rain ended just in time and It was fantastic to see over 150 people from so many different community groups out to speak up against the recent actions of the provincial government. Opposition Leader and Leader of the Ontario NDP Party Marit Stiles joined us and gave a fiery speech about the need for the government to do a far better job on affordable housing and protecting the environment.

Other speakers included Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife, Maribel Jagorin of ACORN Tenants Union, Sam Nabi of Hold The Line, Kitchener-Centre by-election candidates Aislinn Clancy and Debbie Chapman, along with National Farmers Union President Jennifer Pfenning who fell ill earlier that day but sent written remarks stating that we cannot afford to lose anymore farmland in a climate crisis.

Photos from the event are attached below. In addition to having a lot of fun and getting a chance to visit with link-minded people from across the Grand River watershed, there were numerous reporters present that have written excellent articles about the event (links below) including significant front page coverage with colour photos in several newspapers. Kudos to Dorothy Wilson from the Nith Valley Ecoboosters, Sean Campbell from Hold The Line, and others for their excellent interviews and comments with reporters.

Best of all the event got the attention of Premier Doug Ford and the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark who first thing on Monday morning issued a statement trying to counter our narrative and the concerns we raised at the Rally. Expect additional media coverage on this over the days ahead including an article in today's Record listed below:

The Rally Planning Committee is already talking about our next potential Rally on teaming up with the Labour Council, Healthcare Unions, and Teacher’s Union’s to protest at FordFest at Bingeman’s on Friday, Sept 11th. Please let us know if you are interested in helping to plan the event.

There is also a Stop Sprawl Waterdown Rally coming up on Tuesday, August 8th at 5:30pm at Dundas Street and Hamilton Street in Waterdown, Ontario for those who would like to show their support.

4) OHBA Suddenly Fires CEO Luca Bucci - Here’s some breaking news that could have implications on many fronts - The Ontario Home Builder’s Association has just suddenly fired their President (and Former MMAH Chief of Staff to Steve Clark) Luca Bucci with no reasons provided and not even an thank you for his service. Luca is a Conservative insider who faced significant criticism when he left the Minister’s Office and almost immediately began lobbying the government as the OHBA CEO despite there supposedly being a 1 year cooling-off period. There have been numerous complaints filed and investigations are underway by the Integrity Commissioner and Auditor General.

Also, developers involved with the Greenbelt takeouts are apparently scrambling to hire crisis management firms this week so there could be interesting things happening with the Auditor General’s investigation and other investigations underway. Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk has said in the past that her investigations will be concluded prior to the end of her term on Sept 3rd.

We’ll have to see what continues to unfold in the days ahead:

5) Latest Media Coverage - Significant media coverage continues with new polling, articles questioning the ethics and actions of Doug Ford’s provincial government, developers obstructing the Auditor General, and many other issues:

6) Supercharged Sprawl - Environmental Defence has a great new article and information on the proposed provincial changes that will worsen Ontario’s housing crisis and destroy more farms, forests and wetlands. Learn more at:

	https://environmentaldefence.ca/2023/07/14/changes-that-will-worsen-ontarios-housing-crisis-and-destroy-more-farms-forests-and-wetlands/

The proposed changes include:
	- Reverting back to low-density sprawl
	- Encouraging development outside of existing cities and towns
	- Discouraging redevelopment inside cities
	- Removing requirements for urban boundary approvals
	- Building subdivisions in the middle of farm country
	- Removing protection for cultural and archaeological values

Take action and speak up.

7) ALO Building Hope Webinar - The Alliance for a Liveable Ontario held their webinar “Getting it Right: Building the Housing We Need” this past week. Speakers included Professor Carolyn Whitzman and developer Leith Moore. It was a fantastic, informative webinar. Already more than 200 people have watched the video online:

I) Other Issues and Causes - Get Doug Ford to Release Climate Change Reports

From: Sarah Spinks <spinfreeproductions at gmail.com <mailto:spinfreeproductions at gmail.com>>
Sent: Saturday, July 29, 2023, 11:06 a.m.

Subject: Neil and I are trying to get one hundred signatures on this letter over the weekend-explanation
Several SCAN! members have, as an initiative of the Ontario Project Group, formed a climate change Adaptation Caucus. Our first initiative is to get the Ford government to release two climate change reports they have been sitting on -- reports which analyze the impacts climate change is likely to have on Ontario, and some strategies for reducing those impacts. To this end we've prepared an Open Letter to the Ford Government. We are seeking signatures, the more the better, to show public support for the letter.

We are asking you to sign on. Once we have 1000 signatures, we will publish the letter with the signatures.

Here's what we are asking you to do to ensure your name will be added to the open letter.

Read the attached Open Letter
Send an email to JPreleasethereports at gmail.com <mailto:JPreleasethereports at gmail.com> with “Add my name” in the subject line. Put your name, town or city, and postal code in the body of the email. Your name will be added to the Open Letter when it is published.
Send messages to others you think will be sympathetic, asking them to add their names as well.

When we have 1,000 signatures or more, we plan to hold a press conference and publish the letter. We will let you know when that will be.

Thanks so much for lending your support!

Sarah
