With apologies for duplicates
We are pleased to announce the formation of the Coalition of Ontario Watershed Alliances, COWA, whose mission is To make watershed planning the basis of further land use development in Ontario, whether urban, rural, or remote, in order to protect our waters, natural heritage, and agricultural lands for a sustainable future.
The creation of the Coalition comes at a key time, as Ontario faces continued provincial trends toward rampant development, reduced environmental safeguards, and diminished public engagement. The OHI is convinced that as long as we oppose these trends through a narrow land use planning lens we will continue to inherit degraded water quality and lose both the natural heritage that sustains us and the agricultural lands that feed us.
Instead, we think it is time for Ontario to abide by its vision in numerous initiatives such as the Planning Act’s commitment to “promote sustainable economic development in a healthy natural environment within a provincial policy framework” and the Provincial Policy Statement’s charge to planning authorities to “protect, improve or restore the quality and quantity of water by: a) using the watershed as the ecologically meaningful scale for integrated and long-term planning, which can be a foundation for considering cumulative impacts of development.”
We will be announcing a more efforts soon. In the meantime, we thank the seven pre-announcement members and invite you to our visit the website at www.cowa.ca, and consider joining the Coalition.
