This reminds me of this article which was in the Waterloo Chronicle about residents on Longfellow Drive in Waterloo who don’t want a sidewalk put on their street, because it would mean cutting down some mature trees there- notice the 3 huge trees in the photo with red bands around their trunks behind the 2 people in the photo –those beauties for instance would be cut down- but the City wants to put one in when it redoes the pipes under the road. https://www.waterloochronicle.ca/news-story/10232186-sidewalk-showdown-pits-leafy-waterloo-suburb-against-city-hall/ not about a building but about preserving the nature that makes a neighbourhood special and endearing to its residents

Hi All,

I know this Susan from the Horticultural Society. She lives in the Central Frederick area which has been bombarded with developers asking for variances on height, set backs and heritage designations.

It’s very unfortunate that this Council is so pro development in some of the heritage districts even after staff and Council went through 2 years of study and approval of RIENS( residential impacts in existing neighborhoods) !

Have a great weekend

Councils should listen to all when considering changes

Has anyone else noticed a pattern with developments in Waterloo Region in the last few years?

City bylaws, zoning and heritage designations are in place to protect green space, residential homes, neighbourhoods and historically important buildings.

A developer approaches a city council and asks that these protections be overturned so they can build their development. Groups of concerned neighbours, heritage bodies and environmental groups devote a lot of time and thought to eloquently express their concerns to council about tearing down heritage buildings, removing old trees that will take a hundred years to replace and changing the flavour of neighbourhoods.

The city then asks the builder: How high would you like to build?

Cities in the region should listen to the people that will have to live with the new developments, and not just the developers.
