World Water Day
Stand with water defenders under attack

Today is World Water Day, a day to recognize water as a human right and to support those dedicated to protecting it. This year we're standing with courageous water defenders in Central America who are under attack. We hope you'll join us!

Guatemala: Protect water defenders like Lolita

Lolita Chávez led a community referendum on mining and dams in which residents overwhelmingly rejected those activities on Indigenous K'iche territory in Guatemala out of fear they would negatively impact access to clean water and other rights. She's suffered harassment and death threats because of this work.

Other defenders of Indigenous rights to land and water have been imprisoned or even killed. Women defenders have been sexually assaulted. People like Lolita deserve protection, not attacks.

Honduras: Protect water defenders like Tomás

Since Indigenous leader Berta Cáceres was murdered in Honduras a year ago, other leaders of her organization, COPINH, like have been attacked and killed. The current leader, Tomás Gómez Membreño, has survived six attempts on his life.

But COPINH are not the only ones to pay with their blood. Over the past year, there has been an escalation of surveillance, threats, attacks and murders of women and men who dare to defend land rights, Indigenous territory and the environment in Honduras.

Colombia: Amnesty Canada activists are marking a special anniversary of solidarity & resistance

Amnesty activists in Canada are joining with courageous families in rural Colombia to celebrate an inspiring anniversary of resistance, hope and solidarity.

Tomorrow marks twenty years since families in the countryside of San José de Apartadó, desperate to protect their children from a vicious armed conflict, joined together to form a peace community.

When the families of the peace community asserted their right as civilians not to be drawn into the armed conflict, they ironically became targets of suspicion and deadly violence.
