| Dear Louisette,
You’velikely encountered algae in Lake Erie. Perhaps while down at the beachat Port Dover, or fishing off Long Point, or paddling out from CedarBay. If you live further west, towards Point Pelee or Pelee Island,you might have experienced how harmful algae blooms sometimes make thewater too toxic for drinking or swimming.
Join us on Tuesday March 28th in Hamilton to learnmore about what causes these algae to proliferate in Lake Erie; theimpact it's having on birds, fish, wildlife and humans; and what wecan do to address the problem.
Townhall Agenda:
6:30pm - Coffee, meet &greet. A variety of organizations will have informative displays toshare.
7:00pm - Presentations:
- What causes harmful and nuisance algae and why is it a concern?
- April Weppler, Program Manager, Freshwater FutureCanada
- What do the birds tell us? Overview of what current conditions inLake Erie mean for the numerous bird species that depend on the lakefor nesting and migration, including information collected on theissue by hundreds of citizen scientists.
- Dr. Doug Tozer, Ontario Program Scientist, Bird StudiesCanada
- With the Grand River being a central part of their Indigenouscommunities' natural and cultural heritage, members of the Six Nationsof the Grand River Territory have great concern for thehealth of the Grand, its tributaries and Lake Erie. MeaganHamilton and Kerdo Deer will share some of their communities'experiences and perspectives.
- Meagan Hamilton is a Mohawk Turtle Clan member of the SixNations of the Grand River Territory and has helped develop variousconservation efforts at Six Nations, including environmentalmonitoring on behalf of traditional government.
