Hi folks
I've been busy like crazy at this end addressing Line 10 issues and dealing with issues around the Dakota Access Pipeline issue.  The media doesn't want to give either one of these stories any reasonable coverage so I'm working with other folks to get news out to the masses and it's been exhausting to say the least. 
Earlier this month I was speaking at Six Nation's where I met three Oceti Sakowin youth advocates including 23 year old Terrell Iron Shell who is the canupa carrier for the International Indigenous Youth Council at Standing Rock. the canupa means sacred pipe. It is an article of prayer rooted in the vision of a sacred woman they called the White Buffalo Calf Woman. In Catholic communities folks would relate to the experience as a visitation from Mary but this is an Indigenous experience that occurred in the days well before Christians set foot on these lands. She bestowed seven ceremonies through her visit which the Lakota follow to this day. It is Terrell's life's duty to carry these traditions forward for future generations.
When the recent arrests took place at Standing Rock, several guards attacked Turrell as he prayed. He was holding a sacred staff with sacred eagle feathers and had the pipe on him when they began to beat him. He was injured when they threw him in jail. This happened on Thursday. In the attachments are the photos of Terrell and a photo of the attack. 
It was a brutal day. One man got tasered in the face, mace was used on several posters and they were shooting plastic bullets. One horse has injuries, another horse has died. We were worried because we had no word on the condition of Terrell. He was jailed but there was no info on terms for bail etc. There are confirmed incidents of several women who were stripped searched and had to spend the night in jail cells naked. Other reports confirm that people were locked in dog kennels and their arms numbered. 
Then word broke out that an anonymous donor paid 2.5 million in bail to release all those who were arrested on Thursday. That's how Terrell was freed from jail. He's doing alright now thank God. 
I am friends with many of the people on the ground at Standing Rock so I connect with them via personal communications simply to get the factual data chronicled online because people going in and speaking half truths to the public in an effort to discredit the movements. I've been spending many hours simply fact checking to verify data before posting. I'm very busy using social media to make sure that the truth is known and that the misinformation is stopped. 
Late Saturday night a car came in, spun several donuts near the Oceti Sakowin camp and set fire to the grasslands and took off. It was an obvious act of arson and there were eye witnesses including  my girlfriend, solicitor Sylvia McAdam Saysewahum, the founder of Idle No More. She witnessed the fires so I was up most of the early Sunday morning getting the details to relay to media and other agencies. It's been mentally and emotionally exhausting because I know these folks personally who are subject to the abuses taking place at Standing Rock. It's like a being on call. To compensate for the duress it creates, I've been cocooning with my family these days to help keep balanced to maintain health and well being.
I offered prayers and a Smudge ceremony for Daphne. Although I couldn't be at the event in person, I want you to know she is in my heart and prayers. 
I've been researching the fiscal roots of the Dakota Access issue and it starts with Harold Hamm, one of the richest men in North Dakota. You might wonder why this isn't making news but then again I wonder why this other hasn't come forth with greater notice: Donald Trump has a court case in December regarding the alleged rape of a 13 year old girl. With a sword of Damocles over their heads like this and an upcoming election and court process looming it's hard to fathom either side of the presidential campaign would prioritize anything but self preservation and it seems logical that such issues would be an effective tool to drown out issues like the Dakota Access Pipeline, Climate Change, Environmental and Social Justice issues etc. 
Either way we've got to keep on going.
Regarding Enbridge Line 10, I've sent numerous emails to politicians and media regarding what I witnessed and there seems to be no interest at all in printing anything about it so I've contacted a law agency to see what the options there are to establish standardized percentage of completion for Engineering reports for National Energy Board hearings. Currently there are no standards for completion. The NEB like the OMB can't create laws so I'm trying to find the right policy mechanism to get that going. If we can mandate 90% completion in line with provincial laws and hydro policy, it should serve to help level the playing field for Indigenous communities to secure better quality data before decisions are made at the NEB.
