Hi Everyone
I was busy with my family the last few days and was totally out of the loop on the news until a friend contacted me this morning to tell me of an oil spill in the Grand River. I went to investigate with my video to record what I saw and I was shocked.
I went to the Peter Hallman Trail behind the store STOP off Victoria St. I walked south from there along the River and found the spot where the trail was closed. Knowing this is Treaty Lands I had no hesitation to enter the site. Provincial laws don't apply to me here. I am an Indigenous woman on Treaty Lands.
I went down the trail with camera and recorded a path of deforestation they did to facilitate the large excavators getting to the scene.
The booms span over 250 meters yet there were areas outside the booms that were clearly unprotected and oil saturated.
The spill traveled a significant distance UPSTREAM indicating there must have been a very large plume discharged because it goes a distance north of where the point of entry is.
I witnessed the rocks and sand saturated with oil. I saw SARA protected barn swallows, mollusk shells and killdeers which are birds being considered for Species At Risk listing.
I saw the pipe where the solvent dumped the toxin and how it ended up along the River's edge.
I also went to the sewer that was being flushed. The Vac truck was in front of a company called GFL Environmental.
I don't know how or who put this solvent here but the quantity of solvent spilled was massive. Here is the video I made of what I witnessed.
