 Hi folks
The Environmental Bill of Rights now seeking comments for waste free provincial legislation. Temera Brown is advising that we work to include water discharges into that. Things like microbeads, and contaminates like flame retardant PBDE come to mind. These should be banned to keep fisheries protected.  Safer alternatives do exist. Links to the EBR site for comments are below this email.
Also Best Buy just started bumping up their waste drop off to include broken CD's and CD cases, cables, cellphones, cameras, batteries and other tech gadgets. Photos in attachment of their new collection bins.  I spoke with staff and they said they also collect old computers and flat screen TVs to recycle and they get money for it. We should connect them with regional officials to see of we can set up a partnership. We could provide collection areas for them to handle local electronic recycling instead of having residents pay $10 to toss. Here is Best Buy's website regarding their corporate recycling programs here: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/for-kids-environment.aspx . Local staff told me their manager would be more than happy to speak with folks about their programs.
Oxford Bibliographies in Environmental Science published an excellent article on preventing cancer by stepping up public awareness of causality and by improving the regulations of products. Currently many new products can be approved for use in only 3 weeks but can take 30 years to remove if found harmful.
Lulu Note: In Canada Industry Canada is to blame for that one. In Canada the average cancer causality testing is 20 years and yet they are approving products with known radioactive or carcinogenic effects because it is deemed bad for business to delay release. Of course the trend is that the products never actually last for 20 years. Canadian Physicians for the Environment have been working on this issue for years.

We need to prohibit the approval of products with known carcinogens from the get go.  Might want to knit that idea into the waste management issue too. Best means of reducing the harm is to not make use of harmful chemicals to begin with.

EBR links for public comment below thanks to Temera.
