A Community Garden PACT: Alfred Rempel
The community garden is the place,
a place where we learn of the health of our soil,
a place where we learn of the health of our neighbourhood,
a place for participation,
where we learn of the health of our neighbour,

The community garden is the small village,
During a time of globalization, integration, innovation, and always on/never off-connection,
It offers a retreat to a natural place,
a place to find an avocation,
where the cycles of nature are honoured.

Community gardening is the art of the common place,
A place where ideas are planted and consensus can grow,
Encouragement is the nutrient that quickens the spirit,
A place to begin the conversation,
Concern for the other……our extended self,

The garden is a crossroads for our community,
It is part of the language of acceptance.
It a place to discover the strengths and potential of our community.
A place to begin the transformation,
The community garden is a foundation on which to build a positive future.

P articipation,
A vocation,
C onversation,
T ransformation

Self-esteem, mood and general health were measured in 136 allotment gardeners pre- andpost- an allotment session, and 133 non-gardener controls. ANCOVA revealed that allotment gardeners had a significantly better self-esteem, total mood disturbance and general health (P < 0.001), experiencing less depression and fatigue and more vigour (P < 0.0083). Allotment gardening can play a key role in promoting mental well-being and could be used as a preventive health measure.
