>> Dear GRENERS,
>> I was deeply touched when John brought me a gift last week, on your behalf: a biography, "Rachel Carson, Witness for Nature", by Linda Lear.
>>
>> I started it that evening and was interested in the role her mother played in her children's passion for natural history. She wasn't alone in this focus, "for botanizing, bird-watching and nature study interests ...were avidly pursued by a mature naturalists all over the country.... It was touted as a special interest for young readers who would, through learning about the habits of birds, come to love nature and make an emotional commitment to it's protection."
>> "Beginning in 1875 and continuing after WWI, talented female writers...turned out exceptional books and articles promoting an interest in all living creatures, particularly birds.
>> The nature-study movement had its intellectual origin in natural history and theology, but was popularized by the great botanist Liberty Hyde Bailey and his Cornell University colleague, Anna Botsford Comstock about the time the Carson's eldest child, Marion, entered public school."
>> I was surprised to realize that the "Junior Nats" program at Waterloo Region Nature was inspired by a movement that began 140 year ago! And GREN is also continuing in Carson's footsteps.
>> It's going to be interesting reading. Many thanks to you all, and yes, any of you may borrow it when I'm finished!
>>
>> Our daughter Jennie is perhaps making a good start with her older daughter: Tova Élise, at 26 months, was learning recently that "It's OK to lick popsicles, but it's NOT OK to lick snails!"
>
>>
We now have a second granddaughter, Rowan, in Sweden, and hope to be able to hug her before too many more months pass.
After 2 chemo treatments I'm feeling better than I thought I would and the initial shock has worn off, sort of. Many thanks for the kind notes and emails you've sent.
>> Best wishes to you all with your gardens, you families, your activism!
>> Hugs,
>> Daphne
