Hi All-
Attached and below are minutes from the GREN Exec meeting on Sept. 10.
Susan B.
GREN Executive Meeting
Sept. 10, 2014
Susan Koswan, Susan Bryant, Kevin Thomason, John Jackson, Theo Negoita. Regrets: Greg Michalenko
TREASURER’s REPORT- Theo
· $2416 in GREN account
· Paid membership at low ebb at 11
GREN WEBSITE
· Agreed our current website too difficult for our membership to maintain and update. We need a site with a part which never changes and the rest user friendly to maintain and update. Main point is that the site can’t get old.
· We liked (in general) the student Patrick’s mock-up of a new website, using Wordpress.
· GREN documents, our links, and a calendar are 3 requirements. Might consider blogs in the future----someone writes a few paragraphs on an issue. Could call this section "Local issues" or "Watershed issues." We can turn off the comments feature, as that needs monitoring. Kevin can easily change background photos on the site to make it look new.
· Our current web host is paid up until May. With a small GREN membership, partnering with another group for a site makes sense. WREN was considered, but their mandate is not advocacy, though we support their work. Perhaps Sustainable Waterloo would be a better fit. Susan K will set up a meeting with them to discuss possibilities. Kevin will look at other server options.
· Agreed we will pay Patrick $200 for his work and give him the passwords so he can work on our website and tinker with our logo.
· Agreed that we do not want to link to social media as yet, but include links to others from our site.
· We need to review the fixed material on our site. Susan K will revisit our mission principles. John will do water and pipeline. We’ll ask Daphne to do Hidden Valley, Deb S to review the ROPP material, and Lulu the moraine.
· The “Issues” or project areas need to be on the main page, with a button to get the associated documents and details. We want to review the headings and make fewer tabs---a “recipe card” system so people don’t need to scroll.
MUNICIPAL ELECTION
· Do we want a meet and greet with candidates? Susan K will check with Sustainable Waterloo and REEP to see if GREN can partner with them on such a project.
HEADWATERS
· The organization looking for hiking trail suggestions received their funding, and wants
recommendations from us for a trail in this area.
· Dr. Alan Morgan’s Geo-time Trail (4.5 km) was suggested as our proposal. The trail, in Waterloo, opens in November and includes some ponds and moraine as well as geological info and signage.
PROPOSED GREN MEETINGS and ISSUES for this year
· Municipal elections: a joint event with another group would be our fall meeting
· Greening of the LRT corridor – others are working on this and we need to reach out to them.
· Hidden Valley
· Waste issues
· Guelph issues—consult with Norah C
