As shipping season starts, we face a choice on tar sands transport
Dear Louisette,
The Great Lakes region faces a critical choice — should the lakes become a thoroughfare for tar sands crude oil? Join us for a webinar on Thursday, March 27, at noon Central to learn more.
The opening of the shipping locks along the St. Lawrence Seaway and Sault St. Marie are an annual rite of spring around the Great Lakes. But as communities from Montreal to Duluth prepare for the start of another Great Lakes shipping season, our region faces a critical choice.
Plans are in the works to dramatically increase the flow of tar sands crude to the Midwest, and a tar sands shipping route has already been mapped across the waters of the Great Lakes.
Join us Thursday, March 27 to learn more about the questions raised by plans to ship tar sands crude on the lakes. You’ll hear multiple perspectives on the issue:
Emma Lui, National Water Campaigner, Council of Canadians, will provide a Canadian perspective on the threat that tar sands shipment could pose to the lakes.
Jerome A. Popiel, Incident Management and Preparedness Advisor, Ninth U.S. Coast Guard District, will discuss the Coast Guard’s current prevention, preparedness and response regime and what the industry, the guard and other stakeholders would have to do before heavy oil is transported on the lakes.
Andrew Slade, Northeast Minnesota Program Coordinator, Minnesota Environmental Partnership, will provide a local perspective on the proposal for an oil shipping complex in Superior, Wis., how public input moved Wisconsin DNR to require an environmental assessment for the dock project, and how Lake Superior’s waters should be protected.
Register today to get call-in information and reserve your spot.
Sincerely,
Lyman Welch
Water Quality Program Director
*This event is open to the media. Reporters will be asked to hold their questions until the end of the session.
