More Events REEP NewsApril 2014: What a long cold winter that was. And how great to see the signs of spring this week – raccoons, woodpeckers, cardinals, robins. As the snow melts and the creatures emerge from hibernation, our thoughts turn to keeping them out of our houses, and making our homes cozy for the winters to come.

If a basement renovation is something you are considering, check out our expert-led workshop on designing for comfort and efficiency in your space. Then, in our next workshop 'Preparing for the Storm', learn how to protect your investment with practical advice on reducing your risk of flood damage with simple, attractive changes that protect local waterways..

In this newsletter we also profile longtime REEPer (just one of her numerous community roles) Susan Bryant, who is being inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame for her years of activism to keep our drinking water safe. Congratulations Susan!

Warmest Regards,

REEP's Susan Bryant Honoured for Water WorkWaterloo Region Hall of Fame Recognizes Water Warrior

With all of the melting snow this spring, it will be especially important to check your well to ensure a healthy water supply. Excessive water sinking into the soil makes it easier for bacteria to get into your well. Did you know there are about 8,000 private wells in Waterloo Region, and less than a third of them get tested for bacteria in any given year – even though testing is free?

If you are a rural homeowner (non-farm), you can learn more about your well and keeping your water safe by booking a home visit from our qualified Well Aware Water Guide.

Call REEP at 519-744-9799 or email info at reepgreen.ca to book a free well visit.Bookings are limited!
Susan Bryant, an Elmira resident, is not only a Well Aware Water Guide for REEP Green Solutions, but also a longtime activist on environmental and water issues. She is a founding partner of Assuring Protection for Tomorrow’s Environment (a citizen group), an executive member of Grand River Environmental Network, a member of the Chemtura Public Advisory Committee and a volunteer with the Township of Woolwich environmental group.

Susan is a long-serving and self-taught expert whose dedication has earned her much recognition, including an upcoming induction to the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame. She will be one of eight inductees honoured on Sunday, April 27th at the Waterloo Region Museum in Kitchener.

Building Local Resilience to Climate ChangeReflections from
Mary Jane

As I read through the latest IPCC report on Climate Change it reinforced for me the importance of the work that all of us are doing locally, not only reducing the impacts from climate change, but also in adapting to them. Recently, TransitionKW highlighted a number of local initiatives (including REEP’s RAIN Program) when it launched the Climate Adaptation Toolkit to provide useful steps that people can integrate into their daily routines.

Many groups are working towards adaptation at the provincial level also. REEP is a member of Green Infrastructure Ontario, with the goal of conserving, maintaining and improving living green infrastructure across Ontario.

On the mitigation front, the Climate Action Plan for Waterloo Region: Living Smarter in 2020 is entering a new phase as we begin implementation of our community-wide greenhouse gas emission reduction. Onward we go!
