Imperial Oil says lightning caused a small fire at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday in a vent at at the company’s chemical plant in Sarnia.
Crews had the fire out and sounded the all-clear within about 20 minutes, said Imperial Oil spokesperson Jon Harding.
“There were no reports of injuries, no operational impacts.”
But, around the same time, the storm that hit the area resulted in a spill of partially-processed water from the Imperial Oil site to the St. Clair River.
Harding said the overflow was stopped and downstream water users were notified of the spill.
“The water that escaped would be a mix of rain water and water from facilities,” he said.
“All water that falls on our site in a storm like that is collected and treated.”
Harding said it wasn’t known how much water spilled to the river, but the discharge was sampled and didn’t exceed environmental limits.
Monitoring downstream of Imperial Oil “found no detectable impact,” he added.
“We’re investigating the cause of the overflow.”
Imperial Oil’s Sarnia manufacturing site includes a refinery that produces gasoline, aviation, diesel, home heating and marine fuels, as well as a chemical plant making a range of products that includes polyethylene, solvents, higher olefins and aromatics.
