Making a long-term impact on hunger

Finding long-term solutions to hunger is at the heart of Food Banks Canada's
research and policy initiatives

With nearly 900,000 Canadians seeking help from food banks each month,
there's no denying that hunger is a real and immediate problem. As we work
to provide support in the short term to address this need, it's equally
important to develop solutions that will reduce hunger in the long term.
This is a major focus of Food Banks Canada's research and advocacy work. We
believe that only by peeling away the layers can we understand how to
address and resolve this complicated issue.

Understanding hunger in Canada
Food Banks Canada invests significant time in conducting research to
understand the complexities of hunger, and we propose viable solutions that
will have meaningful, long-term impact. Through our research and analysis of
the root causes of hunger we discovered that in the past two decades, too
many working-age people have found themselves unemployed, on social
assistance, or working in jobs offering low pay and few non-wage benefits
due to a radically changing job market.

This is something that Daniel, age 38, knows all too well. As a machine
operator, he was laid off due to a shortage of work and has been unemployed
for several months. This has made life difficult for Daniel, his partner and
their four children. Daniel doesn't want to be using a food bank, but he
needs to in order to get by. He is frustrated at the challenges of finding
work that would compensate him at the same rate as his modest Employment
Insurance earnings. "I don't like coming here, truthfully, but I gotta do
what I gotta do," says Daniel.

Unfortunately this is a situation that many Canadians find themselves in.

with additional support from the Manitoba Turkey Producers, Turkey Farmers
of Ontario and Turkey Farmers of New Brunswick, are working with Food Banks
