Thanks Susan. I hadn¹t seen this.

Here is a letter to the editor on this that was published in The Waterloo
Record a month ago.

Hardly sensible

Re: The right ending for a fire fight ‹ Aug. 29

The Record¹s editorial writers recently praised Kitchener councillors for
coming to an ³intelligent² and ³sensible² solution to the issue of backyard
fires.

The touted ³intelligent² and ³sensible² solution is that people can only
have fires between 5 and 11 p.m. That¹s not a sensible compromise. That is a
total sellout to the people who want backyard fires and a dismissal of those
with health and nuisance concerns.

I am sure that 95 per cent of those who want fires only want to burn them
between 5 and 11 ‹ the prime time to be outside enjoying your yard. This
means that the rest of us who don¹t want to be exposed to smoke and to the
pollution from fires cannot enjoy our backyards at this prime time. It also
means that we can¹t open our windows in the evening to cool off the house so
we can get a better sleep.

My thanks to the three councillors ‹ Dan Glenn-Graham, John Gazzola and Zyg
Janecki ‹ who voted against this mislabelled ³intelligent² and ³sensible²
solution that gives the burners everything they wanted.

I hope that when this issue comes to council again at the bylaw stage next
March, the rest of council will see the wisdom of these three councillors
and will vote for a ban on outdoor burning similar to that in our
neighbouring municipalities of Cambridge and Waterloo.
