Hi folks

Here's an overview of the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act as provided to me from Donna Baylis who is involved with the Melancthon Mega Quarry issue. Her summery is in the attachments.

Subject: MQ: Federal EA / CEAA 2012 (HL)

Last
night I attended an overview of the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act
(CEAA).  My notes to-date are
attached.
 Take-A-Ways:
- We
can influence the CEAA process by writing to the
Minister.
-
Since a new game is afoot, each environmental assessment (EA) will be unique so
we can’t say “it’s a done deal”.
- There are opportunities for success in the
chaos.
-
Limited public engagement in the formal process will likely generate action
outside the process.
-
Public needs to be vigilant – nothing is protecting us, our environment or our
lifestyles.

In
regard to the proposed mega-quarry specifically, I believe it is too early in
the life of new CEAA to request a federal environmental
assessment.  The federal government is too busy getting organized and
washing their hands of existing projects to take on anything new.  I also
believe that the Harper government is so pro-resource exploitation as to
be hostile to any environmental protectionism.  I am therefore
putting my call for a federal EA on hold probably until a change of
government.

Please
remember that my opinions are my own and are a reflection of amateur research
and understanding.  I do my best but no guarantees!
