Subject: I support the Kyoto extension: IT IS IMPERATIVE CANADA ACTS
Dear Hon. Prime Minister, Ministers
We can no longer delay implementing meaningful climate change action.
Here is a climate lecture by the UN Environmental Programme executive directior Achim Steiner

In this report it notes the following:
Global emissions should be around 44 gt in 10 years to prevent 2 degree temperature change but emissions might hit 49 Gt.
Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP), published in May: sea-level rise of close to a meter or more by the end of the century.
A World Bank study has estimated that a one-meter sea-level rise would affect 84 developing countries alone.
The Copenhagen Diagnosis of 2009: potential for a temperature rise by 2100 of as much as 7 degrees C if there is no action to cut emissions.
Some researchers suggest a worst case scenario of a 4 degree Celsius temperature rise by around 2060 even higher in S. Europe and N. Africa.
Arctic free of summer ice by 2030, could reduce the sunlight reflected back into space leading to more heat absorbed by the Earth and more carbon released from melting glaciers.
65 per cent of present maize-growing areas in Africa would experience yield losses for a one degree Celsius warming.
National University of Singapore, suggests that some animals and plants are already getting smaller as a result of climatic impacts.
World population is set to rise to over nine billion by 2050.
UNEP's International Resource Panel, consumption of several key natural resources could triple by 2050 to 140 billion tonnes if growth is linked by consumption.
Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) estimated that "sudden natural disasters" displaced 42 million people in 2010.
In 2010, over 90 per cent of disaster displacement within countries was caused by climate-related hazards, primarily floods and storms.
Hurricane Mitch: 70-80 per cent of Honduras's transportation infrastructure was destroyed and existing maps of country were made obsolete.
Recent studies have found that up to 12 per cent of the world GDP is already at risk from existing climate patterns.
Natural disasters challenge food security: loss of land from sea-level rise, destruction of crops and damage to food distribution networks.
Investing 2% of global GDP into ten key sectors can kick-start a transition towards a low carbon, resource efficient Green Economy.
Green Economy would realize per capita incomes higher than under current economic models,
Green Economy can reduce the ecological footprint by nearly 50 per cent in 2050, as compared to business as usual.
UNEP draft report- Towards a Green Economy: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication data Green economy better than brown economy.
Fossil fuel subsidies range from US$400 - US$650 billion per year, depending on the price of oil.
In 2008, Indonesia subsidies to fossil fuels were higher than gov't investment in health, education and infrastructure added together.
Half a trillion dollars per year subsidizing fossil fuels = eight times the cost annually to fully implement Millennium Development Goals.
Fossil fuel subsidies seriously tilts the playing field away from renewables..
International Energy Agency: stopping fossil fuel subsidies = 40% of the carbon reduction needed to hold global warming to the 2 degrees.
Genuine Progress Indicator, or GPI measures the 'sustainability of income through economic and also social and environmental indicators.
US GPI it has stagnated since the 1970s.
Climate Change action is paralyzed by the politics of suspicion and finger pointing between nations.
Mr. Harper I absolutely DEMAND you partake fully in the continuance of the Kyoto process and support this initiative. The majority of Canadians supported Kyoto as it passed through the legislature. I personally rallied with over 350 people on this issue in downtown Waterloo along with millions of others during international days of protest organized with 350.org during the climate talks in Copenhagen.
We have very little time to act to curb the damages. Experts at the University of Waterloo are predicting the worst case scenario right now. We absolutely must act or millions will die as a direct result of climate change. Millions more by way of the ever increasing health risks associated with smog. Heart and Stroke disease, Asthma and endocrine disrupters are taking a toll. In Sarnia the endocrine disruptive petroleum refinery emissions are causing to babies changing sex as noted by Dayna Nadine Scott, Co-director of the National Network on Enviornment and Women's Health. Her presentation on this issue can be viewed here: http://www.cwhn.ca/en/node/42725
I do not support the Keystone or the Tarsands. I made that point when I was detained with 200 others in Ottawa. You can read about my arrest here: http://www.alternativesjournal.ca/on-the-ground-at-the-keystone-xl-protest
Please stop facilitating global dependency on fossil fuels. Please stop subsidizing oil companies and start listening to the public. Having attended Occupy Rallies I hear the same message over and over again. We need to stop focusing on corporate ambitions, stop giving banks the power to govern us via their fiat currency and start listening to the people of Canada. We need a Renaissance of the Bank of Canada.
Using the powers of the Bank of Canada, we can create green jobs to offset our fossil fuel dependency with interest free loans. The money produced is spent into existance by way of jobs and the fiscal benefits for the nation are huge. The National Academy of Sciences concluded in 2001 that a handful of clean energy technologies returned about $30 billion on a research and development (R&D) investment of about $400 million in the US. We can share similar victories with political will and federal help.
Please Mr. Harper. Don't let big businesses and their media shills cloud the reality of the situation. Canadians and the global community are demanding climate change action. They are demanding the priority be placed on humans before corporate interest. It's time to listen to them and act.
