On behalf of Jack Layton, thank you for writing. 

We appreciate hearing your serious concerns regarding the proposed
Melancthon Quarry. On this matter, please know that the granting of quarries
in Ontario falls strictly under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources.

You will be interested to know that the Ontario NDP is bringing much needed
attention to this issue. Expressing concern on behalf of the Ontario NDP,
MPP Peter Tabuns stated, "on the face of it, the quarry looks like a very
questionable proposition. Making sure we have clean, uncontaminated water is
a very high priority for the NDP. We look at this and we see real potential
risk for those headwaters." 

Furthermore, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath presented petitions to the
Liberal government on behalf of area residents who share your concern.

Looking forward, please know that you can count on the Ontario NDP to
continue to press this matter.
