Please reserve April 6 for a special GREN-sponsored meeting on the situation
with the Aamjwnaang first nation who are surrounded by Sarnia¹s chemical
valley. Two residents from there will talk about the contamination impacts
on their community and their organizing efforts. EcoJustice has recently
launched a lawsuit on behalf of the Aamjwnaang against Ontario¹s Ministry of
the Environment for violation of their basic human rights by continuing to
approve permits that allow for pollution in the area. A representative of
EcoJustice and of the National Network on Environments and Women¹s Health
will also be joining us.
This lawsuit is important beyond the people in Sarnia. It can set a
precedent for all communities in terms of forcing the government to take
into account the cumulative impacts of contaminant discharges when issuing
permits to specific polluters.
This event will start at 7 pm, April 6th at First United Church in Waterloo.
We would like your help in getting the word out on this event. Please let us
know of networks through which we can get the word out. We are also
interested in seeing if there are groups who would like to co-sponsor the
event. We are thinking, for example, of faith groups who may have a
particular interest in this issue and in supporting the Aamjwnaang.
Our thanks to Lulu for taking the lead in organizing this event.
John
