I was listening to CBC's the Current yesterday as they were discussing
Toronto gravel shortage issues. They stated that Toronto was built as a
big city because of the eskers placed in that area during the ice age
made it cheap to build massive highways and buildings etc. They stated
that Lestor B. Person Airport, the CN Tower and many of the city's large
buildings were built from the gravel dug up in Brampton but now that
supply has dried up. Apparently Toronto is looking to exploit Caledon as
their next supply.
The show will be aired on CBC's the Current
in the near future. It was aired on Jan. 12th so it has yet to be
posted, but it will be found online here:

They also stated there was a previous episode aired speaking out against the gravel pits but I don't know what date it was
aired.
