[All] Waterloo Region's Trees and funding for them

Here's more info about Trees in our area.

 

The Environmental Commissioner's latest report mentions a
GRCA tree planting project near Pioneer Tower in south Kitchener. Around 15,000
native trees — black walnut, silver and sugar maple, white and burr oak,
cottonwood, white cedar and white pine — were planted on nine hectares of
land.
 

Gord Miller stated, “To say trees are
important is an understatement,” 

  
Currently the GRCA are aiming for 30% tree coverage which would make our water shed one of
 the most heavily forested if successful. Projects are being done in 
partnership with Trees Ontario. 


I know 
that currently, funding for tree planting for schools, parklands etc. is
 available by way of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
 The program is run by volunteers and donations are provided by banking 
customers to fund local environmental projects. Our location is particularly wealthy 
in terms of funds. Most grants given are around $2,500 but earlier this 
year they donated $10,000 to help support the U of W's green roof for 
their new LEEDS Platinum facility. They've helped landscape schools, they fund work by Trout Unlimited to help restore creeks etc.
