Subject: [healthycommunities] 2nd Annual Jane's Walk - Tour Guides needed!

Good afternoon,

Waterloo Region is participating in Jane's Walk 2010, which takes place on
May 1 and 2. You are receiving this email because I'm hoping you may be
interested in leading a walking tour or maybe you know of someone who is.

Jane's Walk is a free walking tour, which is led by and for anyone
interested in discussing or listening to stories about something in their
city, neighbourhood or hangouts, etc. Walks are expected to take place in
more than 20 cities across Canada this year. The central theme around Jane's
Walk is based on Jane Jacobs' idea that, to properly plan our communities,
we must learn about how they work by walking around in them. Past tours have
been led by grade 6 students, guerrilla gardeners, urban planners,
university students, professors, social historians, activists and former
city mayors. Tour or stop themes are only limited to your imagination and
could include general culture or history, reurbanization, energy use,
conservation, transportation, hangouts and shortcuts, queer history,
sidewalks, homelessness, art, etc.

Below is more information, including an invitation to a planning meeting on
April 7. If you would like to organize a walk, I would like to hear from you
at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to forward this email to
anyone you think might be interested in either organizing a walk or simply
walking with us. General information about Jane's Walk is available at
www.janeswalk.net.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Ann Derry

2010 JANE'S WALK

Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge

May 1 and 2, 2010

"No one can find what will work for our cities by looking at .suburban
garden cities, manipulating scale models, or inventing dream cities. You've
got to get out and walk"

- Jane Jacobs

WHAT IS JANE'S WALK?

Jane's Walk is the street-level celebration of Jane Jacobs' legacy.
Sponsored by The Centre for City Ecology across North America, the event
combines the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history
and local lore as a means of knitting people together into strong and
resourceful communities. Jane's Walk aids in the socially desirable goal of
getting people out of their cars and onto the sidewalks for the basic tasks
of daily life, shopping, schools, and work.

This will be the second year that Waterloo Region participates in Jane's
Walk. For the first annual Waterloo Region Jane's Walk in 2009, eight
neighbourhood walks were organized and more than 100 people participated
across the region. Nationally, 315 neighbourhoods were explored by more than
10,000 people during last year's Jane's Walk.

Jane's Walks are meant to be fun and participatory - everyone has a story
and they are usually keen to share it. All tours are given and taken for
free.

YOU CAN ORGANIZE AND LEAD A NEIGHBOURHOOD WALK!

You can lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. It simply
involves planning a route, thinking through the stories, places, and people
you want to talk about, then walking participants through it - you decide
what's important. You can also share the guiding duties with a few friends.

The publicity, logistics, and website for the event are handled by The
Centre for City Ecology. Staff from the Region of Waterloo will work with
The Centre to promote our local events on the Jane's Walk website.

You can learn more about Jane Jacobs, her work, and the Jane's Walk event
(including 'tips for tour guides' and other resources) by visiting
www.janeswalk.net <http://www.janeswalk.net/> . You do not have to be
familiar with Jane Jacobs' work to lead a tour.
