The city of Waterloo staff have initiated the removal of trees. Many trees have been cut, many more are marked including huge black cherry trees that appear to be healty trees hundreds of years old.
In the attachment is the sign posed on site along with photos of what I saw today. The trees are being removed from the capture zone of a vernal pond as seen in the phots.
Previous reports confirmed sightings of Acadian Flycatchers, Hooded warblers, Red headed woodpeckers and Jefferson Salamanders. This area is in close proximity to W-12.
The city intends to put the servicing, lights and asphalt trails thorugh this area which will degrade the habitat. If coyotes are driven off, we'll see overpredation of the area amphibians by raccoons. To protect the amphibians and low nesting birds, we must maintain the coyotes in this area. I did share this concern with the city prior to the removal of the trees but it did not stop them from augmenting the forest.
I've informed the MNR, Environment Canada and the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario about this.
