Hi folks
I would like to share some information to you regarding Storm Water Management (SWM) ponds.
Professor Mike Stone used Waterloo used a case study to present a paper that identifies SWM issues that must be addressed. I've included this PDF file in the attachments for your reference.
First issue: "Refining hydrologic and contaminant transport models in urban systems". Currently private consultants continue to predict low contaminant (i.e., road salt) transfer to the groundwater after land development but these predictions are usually wrong. (they often fail to examine the sediment type in proximity to the projected ponded area and issues such as the loosing recharge in Clair Creek where this salty water was intended to end up.)
Second issue: Consultants have predicted minimal reduction of well volumes in the vicinity of land development but after development, the local wells go dry... as observed in the vicinity of the Waterloo Moraine on the west side of Waterloo.
By the way, the example Mr. Stone used is in regards to the SWM pond located in my subdivision of Columbia Forest in Waterloo. This data was presented at the experts meeting and it helped to secure the concessions we won at the OMB.
I've created a website at www.waterloomoraineact.com. If you look at the SWM pond section, you'll find more issues to consider including the nitrate phosphate from geese etc.
