David Suzuki @ ReThink Waterloo 2009
9am-4pm, Saturday, October 17
Centre in the Square - 101 Queen Street North, Downtown Kitchener
A WPIRG Sponsored Event
Rethink Waterloo is honoured to have Dr. David Suzuki present the closing keynote address for our 2009 conference on Saturday, October 17. Dr. Suzuki is one of Canada's most respected scientists, environmentalists, and speakers. He has become a household name as a Canadian environmental icon, having spent a lifetime dedicated to promoting environmental awareness.
What Can I Do? - Dr. David Suzuki will talk about the fundamental crisis, which is the way we see ourselves on this planet. We have come to think we are the reason the rest of nature exists, that it is our right to use whatever we want if we can make money. He will talk about what it is that blocks us from seeing our true nature, that is, we are biological beings as dependent on the productivity of the rest of life on Earth as any other species. Our numbers, technology, consumption and economy are totally out of balance within the biosphere. It is extremely urgent, as we are undermining the life support systems. David will describe what we have to do and try to show that if we can get through the current bottleneck of denial, most people will prefer to live as we are going to have to. His entire talk will be linked to what we can do as individuals to make changes.
ReThink Waterloo 2009 is a public forum to promote sustainability in the Region of Waterloo. This day long event will help members of our community - inspired to take action towards a sustainable future - to answer the question "What can I do?". The conference will feature workshops and networking opportunities in addition to Dr. Suzuki's keynote.
Reduced price student tickets to the conference are available through WPIRG for $12.25. Tickets can be purchased at the WPIRG office in SLC 2139 during regular office hours (10am-4pm, Monday to Friday). Any student attending UW, WLU, Connestoga or grade school is welcome to purchase the discounted ticket. Community members can purchase tickets at the Centre in the Square Box Office for $30.00 plus applicable fees.--
