[All] Lulu Vs. Liberals

Hi folks

I'm getting some feedback from the Federal Liberal party of Canada that you might be interested in. I've been sharing concerns with them in regards to their recent delay of Bill C-311. Only 14 liberals supported the bill's approval without delay prior to Copenhagan and as a result we're going in with nothing. Plus the Liberals sat quietly by as the Tories spent over $300 million in shoddy science to capture carbon underground.

If you'd like to read the exchanges I've had, feel free. I highly encourage EVERYONE to not only share their concerns with their elected leaders but with various official parties as well. Time to hold these folks in check.

I've got a meeting with Peter Braid scheduled for Nov. 10th with another group I'm involved with called JustEarth. I'll be sure to share what info I glean from the process with you as well.

Lulu

Originally tabled in October 2006 as Bill C-377 it passed 3rd reading in the House of Commons with the support of the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois with Mr. Harper’s opposition.  Due the 2008 federal election ending the parliamentary session.

This time around only 14 Liberals supported it without delay. What reasonable excuse is there to state that it should not be passed at this time?

In terms of "ACTUAL" mechanisims to reduce green house gas, it further blows my mind that the Liberals are allowing the Harper Government to invest $342.8 million in the Transalta Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project.

This took place in spite of the fact that no full-scale integrated Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system for a coal fired plant or tar sands developer now exists. Commercial availability is still at least 10 to 15 years away.

With the exception of bitumen upgraders, CCS is largely unsuitable for tar sands. Emissions are so diverse from the project that a 2008 government study concluded "that only a small portion of the CO2 streams are currently amenable for CCS due to both the size of the emission streams and the concentration."

Vital information needed to create general governance capable of managing wide-scale commercial deployment of CCS is not yet available and the Alberta Carbon Capture and Storage Development Council describes CCS as “expensive and currently uneconomic" without taxpayer subsidies of one to $3 billion a year over several decades.

1. In light of the concerns noted, what reasonable evidence is there to provide to Canadian taxpayers to justify the expense of this investment.

2. What fiscal return will Canadian taxpayers see from this investment of their tax dollars?

3. Has there been any preliminarily economic analysis to support the decision to invest? If so what report is it and where can we secure this data.

The truth is, without C-311 ratified by the Liberals, and with a silent voice of oppostion towards Harper's dictator like machinations, there is little to show any difference between the Librerals and Conservatives in my view.

Winston Churchill was quoted as saying:

Laws just or unjust may govern men's actions. Tyrannies may restrain or regulate their words. The machinery of propaganda may pack their minds with falsehood and deny them truth for many generations of time. But the soul of man thus held in trance or frozen in a long night can be awakened by a spark coming from God knows where and in a moment the whole structure of lies and oppression is on trial for its life.

When the liberals failed to ratify Bill C-311 my spark was lit and there is simply no quenching that fire. The Liberal party is failing to protect the people of this nation and the public is waking up to that pretty darn quick.

As for Stephane Dion. I wish to God he would still be leader of this party. He should rise again. The man understood the science!

Good morning Louisette,

I can understand and appreciate your concern with the Liberals wanting a 30-day extension, but it is necessary if we want to actually reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). Bill C-311 focuses on targets, but the Conservatives do not have any plans to implement that will allow us to achieve the necessary GHG reductions.

Liberals are focused on the actual mechanisms to reduce GHGs. That is why we have committed to: introducing the largest investment in clean energy (including wind and solar) the nation has ever seen ; and work with ENGOs, to implement a strong cap-and-trade system with hard caps, with no loopholes, that will achieve real reductions.

The Liberal Party is committed to an ambitious result from Copenhagen, unlike the Conservatives whose sole objective is to sabotage international progress in the fight against climate change. We just need extra time to ensure that the proper mechanisms are in place for making our targets attainable.

Kind regards,

I am absolutely appalled at the how the liberals delayed Bill C-311. This proposal has been on the table for years, it made through three readings and was on it's way to the Senate prior to the last election and was put on the backburner until it was reintroduced by Jack Layton under private members bill.

On October 13th, I wrote a glowing letter about Michael Ignatiff's leadership on Climate Change for what he said in Vancouver and yet I had no idea how the liberal party voted to delay this globally important bill prior to Copenhagan. I am terribly disappointed in Mr. Ignatiff.  His deeds in failing to pass this bill was like adding vinegar to milk. All the hopes I had in him have soured. He is repulsive as a leader to me.

Today youth were arrested in the House of Commons for a disturbance they made regarding Bill C-311. This act is one of the concequences of Mr. Ignatiff''s failed leadership.

I leave you with a quote:

Our government... teaches the whole people by its example.  If the
government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites
every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy.
~Louis Dembitz Brandeis

To not support Bill C-311 was in my view, a crime against humanity. It's a shame.

Yours sincerely,
