As increasing urbanization and other forms of development reach further upstream from Lake Ontario, it must be managed in a more sensitive manner than how we’ve pursued development downstream. Currently, the headwater areas of several South-central rivers provide reservoirs of natural heritage and water that protect the overall health of their rivers from the full impact of excessive downstream development. According to executive director Andrew McCammon, “Following these same regulations and guidelines in our headwaters may push ecological tipping points for whole watersheds and regional ecosystems.
