[GREN-Exec] Questions for 100 Debates

Don't supply the questions ahead of time. That's what is done in authoritarian states, so that baffle-gab or ass-protecting explanations cn be prepared to soothe the multitudes. I remember once a CBC news item that included a few street interviews in Calgary where Prime Minister Mulroneyhad just given a major policy speech. The most discerning reponse the reporter got was "What I hate is the way Mr. Muroney always lowers his voice when he's abut to lie."
Also, if you don't supply the questions ahead of time you get an accurate picture of how knowledgeable a candidate is and how good their thinking capacity is. You avoid coverups.
If you send the questions, the slick professional managers who control the puppet strings for their client parties will be really gleeful and have a field day. They love manipulating and tricking naive people.
-been there and had it happen to me, Greg Michlenko, who once trusted too much.

Thanks Jenna,
Just have my phone here, so sorry if this is a duplicate, but this just came through from GREN member:
Eric from Stand.earth. In the lead up to the federal election, we've been stepping up the pressure on candidates from all parties to commit to cancelling the Trans Mountain pipeline. Do you want to find out if any candidates in your riding have taken the pledge to fight Trans Mountain pipeline.
Best,
Susan

Hi All,
We are finalizing our suggestions for format and questions this morning, will distribute for comment, and then our plan was to send the final list of questions to the candidates by noon on Tuesday so they could have just over 24 hours to review and prep.
Will be in touch later today with the questions for feedback.

Subject: RE: Questions for 100 Debates
Hi,
I understand why you would like to give them the opportunity, however, if we send one candidate the questions, I think we need to send them to all candidates. It seem like it would be an unfair advantage to have one candidate be able to prepare specific answers (or have others write answers for them for them to present), when the other candidates don’t have that options. Personally, I think we should deny a request for a video for those reasons, if they can’t make it, that’s unfortunate but not in our power to fix. It also leads to additional tech issues having to show a video.
Thank you,
Stephanie

I’ve been through, several times, yesterday’s and today’s print versions and can’t find the article. Will look tomorrow.
What is the status of the list of questions? Our NDP candidate was announced this week, and he is unable to attend the 100Debates event in Kit Con due to a previous commitment that he can’t break. He has offered to send a video to us to show at the event. We agreed to this. He needs the questions to prepare his answers, and I said I’d send him the questions as soon as I could.

Here is a connection to the fossil fuels question that I received after I posted the info about the100 Debates event on the Future Ground Network's Slack account. https://futuregroundnetwork.org/<https://smex12-5-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2ffuturegroundnetwork.org&umid=215514b3-a197-4ddc-a89a-21829efec164&auth=a91d7066ec195dc785a44660b68995b816c6fc56-a6e91e74c8108f52f84141b256d14ad372418eae>

Hi @Dorothy Wilson<https://futuregroundnetwork.slack.com/team/U018F728G4V> So great to hear you're doing this! Would you be interested in having attendees or your group ask the candidates at the debates if they would be willing to endorse and act upon the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative: https://fossilfueltreaty.org/<https://smex12-5-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2ffossilfueltreaty.org&umid=215514b3-a197-4ddc-a89a-21829efec164&auth=a91d7066ec195dc785a44660b68995b816c6fc56-48b9f72de32215213a3e19c787a14a6246d543b2>. I am working with a group in the Toronto area that is asking all candidates to pledge to act on this initiative if elected. I can send you more info, and our pledge certificates.

Hi Tim,
I think your press release is great. I believe that Betsey has already contacted you regarding the correct contact email for the Kitchener-Conestoga debate (nvecoboosters.events at gmail.com<mailto:nvecoboosters.events at gmail.com>). I am happy to send out the press release to the places I usually contact unless someone else wants to do that. Here's the list that I use:
* The New Hamburg Independent – Lauren Scott (reporter)
* The Wilmot Post
* Waterloo Region Rural Post
* Waterloo Region Record (Leah Gerber)
* Ayr News
* Woolwich Observer (Sean Heeger)
* CBC radio
* CTV
* 570 News
Regarding the questions: They cover a lot of good issues. I suggest we combine the ideas into no more than 6 questions, maybe even fewer, because I am assuming we will want to have the audience submit some questions as well either through a chat function on the Zoom call or a Q&A function. Someone needs to be assigned for each Zoom call to monitor the audience questions and forward them to the moderator.
Here's my suggestion re combining the question ideas.
Debate Questions
#2 & 11 Wilderness, Wildlife and Water protection
#4, 13 & 15 Ending Fossil Fuel Subsidies & ban export of thermal coal
#5, 9, 10 & 12 Green and just pandemic recovery including housing issues
#6 Strengthening CEPA to deal with toxic substances and environmental racism
#7 Involvement of Indigenous peoples
#3, 8, 14 & 16 Climate action – reducing emissions, promoting energy efficiency and renewables, making polluters pay, all party caucus

Hi all – I’ve attached a draft press release that we can use for this year’s debates. Input most welcome. There are three pieces of information that need to be filled in:
- Phone number for Jenna Quinn
- Phone number for Katie Hill
- Moderator for Waterloo debate
Additions/subtractions/changes most welcome. It is brief, but will get us on peoples’ radar quickly.
All the best,
Tim

Hello, Everyone
Another thing that needs to be on the radar is a press release. I got a hold of the press release (attached here) that was released in 2019, and it needs updating. I can change dates, etc, but I can’t update the references or quotes.
Anyone able to work on this?

Hi Tim et al.
I’m happy to help with questions as well, and will solicit suggestions from WRN members also. To start us off, I’ve compiled the questions from GreenPAC, Environmental Defence (from other email chain), and GREN list into a google doc. Maybe we could all add any question suggestions there for now as a first step and then we can review and see what works.

Hi all – I am happy to help with the suggested questions and work with the moderators of each debate. There are some recommended questions from 100 Debates, as well as the ones submitted by GREN in this thread. It would also be good to include lots that draw on the TransformWR report, especially given that the Federal government will be critical in meeting the interim GHG target of 50% by 2030.
If there is someone else who would also like to help with the questions, I’d be grateful for the support.
All the best,
Tim

Subject: Questions for 100 Debates
Hi Everyone
I've started a new thread for questions. These were submitted today from GREN list. Is anyone here taking responsibility for creating the final list of questions we'll all use?
* What is the sq’ of living space per person that is considered sustainable for the planet?
* Will the proposed funding support the size of houses/cohousing/multi unit residences that are sustainable for the planet?
* Where will the gravel come from for hundreds of thousands of new homes, without affecting water shed purity?
* Will the proposed incentives include rentals by homeowners who have unsustainably large homes?
Thanks,
Susan
