Hi GREN Executive,
I mentioned about a week and half ago about a senior leader at the Region telling me that the River Road extension we have fought for years and was always told was essential and had to proceed despite the $80 million price tag and the Jefferson Salamanders would instead be deferred in the upcoming 2022 capital budget. Apparently, the developers have caught wind of this and are pushing hard to have the roadway built as originally planned. Regional Staff are hoping that some people from the community will come out to support the recommended deferral and help prevent this road from being built (for a few years at least - perhaps never if we can push it out long enough).
I have spoke with Neil Taylor and Gord Nichols with hour-long phone calls to each of them. They are going to try to do what they can but I think while we don’t need 100 people speaking on the capital budget it might not hurt to have a few voices or letters. Please let me know if you can speak to it or can suggest others who can speak to it this coming Wednesday, November 24th or Thrusday, December 9th in advance of the final budget approval on December 15th. Even a few letters could be helpful.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of information about it - I only received a phone call and haven’t been able to find much detailed information about the budget online.
Please share any thoughts or ideas - after decades of battles that Daphne Nichols fought so hard for, I would hate to drop the ball and see a potentially easy win slip past now.
Thanks,
Kevin.
