I just rediscovered Kevin’s ask last night, catching up on email. I’ve been fixated on the U.S. stuff and let things go. Sorry.

What do the rest of you think about both asks? We aren’t exactly fixed with lots of resources to help either effort, but we could sign on to both to stay updated in case we there are opportunities for GREN to contribute.

While you are looking at the request Kevin just resent you, also please look at this request to GREN that was sent to me last week. What do you think? Should we get involved?

Dear John,

I enclose below a copy of our Jan 11 e-mail newsletter announcing a new project – Headwater Alliances.
As expressed in a follow up post on our FaceBook site earlier today –
The Ontario Headwaters Institute is deeply concerned about the impact of traditional development on the headwater areas of South-central Ontario. As increasing urbanization and other forms of development reach further upstream from Lake Ontario, it must be managed in a more sensitive manner than how we’ve pursued development downstream. Currently, the headwater areas of several South-central rivers provide reservoirs of natural heritage and water that protect the overall health of their rivers from the full impact of excessive downstream development. According to executive director Andrew McCammon, “Following these same regulations and guidelines in our headwaters may push ecological tipping points for whole watersheds and regional ecosystems. We must do better upstream.”

With so much growth now focused on the headwater areas of many of South-central Ontario’s watersheds, we wonder if creating a headwaters alliance in the upland areas of the Grand might be of mutual interest.

Please share internally along with my interest to discuss this at your convenience.

As we face on-going challenges to protect Ontario’s environment, as per this editorial from the Globe and Mail<https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editorials/article-the-ford-government-is-harming-ontarios-environmental-future/>, the OHI is please to announce a new project, Headwater Alliances as well as the first headwater alliance, for the Credit watershed, in partnership with 8 local organizations.

The OHI will be facilitating the creation of these alliances in order to develop Community Visions to help us better protect our headwater areas in the future than how we have managed the downstream areas of most of South-central Ontario in the past.

You can learn more at https://ontarioheadwaters.ca/headwater-alliances/, and of course we are happy to chat with you if your area could benefit from establishing a local alliance. Please feel free to e-mail me at the address above or call me at 416 231 9484.

The new project is described on a rejuvenated OHI website, including an updated organizational Brochure, a Backgrounder on Watershed Management, a Fact Sheet on Wetlands, a second Fact Sheet on What can I do?, and a higher profile for our YouTube channel, all at https://ontarioheadwaters.ca/education/.

We will also be linking Headwater Alliances to WaterScape and the Declaration to Preserve Ontario’s Ecological Integrity, which if you have not yet signed you can do so here<https://waterscape.ca/declaration/>.

We look forward to continuing to press for a sustainability lens for land use planning in Ontario, transitioning the province to Integrated Watershed Management, and including headwater areas in enhanced watershed mapping, planning, monitoring, reporting, and restoration.

We hope you support these goals, but if for any reason you’d like to no longer receive our e-mails please just reply to this one, putting “unsubscribe” in place of the subject line above.

Looking upstream for a better 2021,

Andrew McCammon
