Re: Greenbelt "expansion" issue.

  1. We should take Mike Schreiner's statement as our base position. He launched the private member's bill that got the G moraine protected. I heard him on CBC radio and he was careful to point out that this "expansion" is not what the Ford junta claims it is. Could one of you call his office to see if they have a written statement.
  2. To make it a real expansion, in Waterloo Region, it would take in an area encompassing the 3 Regionally-designated Environmentally Sensitive Landscapes in the Region (Laurel Creek at the northeast corner of Waterloo city, Barrie's Lake area west of Preston, and a third southwest of Cambridge).
  3. There is no interactive public consultation. The 60 days is pretty meaningless, and I'm pretty sceptical about the value of getting an anonymous blurb accepted by the Environmental Registry..
  4. The Record editor has already got sucked in and today says Ford is being applauded by env. organizations for his green transformation. I'll write a letter.

I'm busy today completing a writing assignment about my recently deceased sister's life. Will have more time starting tomorrow.

See here what CELA os planning on doing and offer to help us out. To translate internal CELA code among CELA staff and Board members, PLE means Public Legal Education.

What do we want to do with this?

Anastasia and I will be analyzing the grow the greenbelt proposals and consultation. I think the GREN groups need to get involved. I am meeting Anastasia on Monday but our initial reaction will be positive as we have called for expanding greenbelt in past for water, natural heritage and agricultural protection. I think work will need to be done between citizens and all of the affected municipalities up and down the Grand watershed (which is mostly what is affected in map 1 on the consultation with the paris-galt moraine). We will be doing analysis and commentary; let us know if you want any PLE with the groups on this. I expect there will be others not so happy; and of course none of this is final boundaries so that needs real work to make sure it is the right land being protected if they actually move ahead on this. And yes we know it is complicated!
